Dietary Sources and Bioactivities of Melatonin

Abstract: Insomnia is a serious worldwide health threat, affecting nearly one third of the general population. Melatonin has been reported to improve sleep efficiency and it was found that eating melatonin-rich foods could assist sleep. During the last decades, melatonin has been widely identified and qualified in various foods from fungi to animals and plants. Eggs and fish are higher melatonin-containing food groups in animal foods, whereas in plant foods, nuts are with the highest content of melatonin. Some kinds of … Show more

“…The antioxidant molecular mechanisms of resveratrol. 1 Resveratrol unanchors Nrf2 in the cytoplasm, disrupting its Keap1-dependent ubiquitination and degradation. The built-up Nrf2 translocates into the nucleus, binds to ARE, and initiates the transcription of many antioxidative genes such as SOD and CAT to reduce oxidative stress.…”

“…Many foodstuffs and their bioactive components are beneficial to certain diseases including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and cancer [1,2]. Resveratrol is a polyphenol, which naturally occurs in numerous foods, such as blueberries and peanuts, as well as grapes and their derived products like red wine [3].…”

“…In mammals, melatonin has been identified in all body fluids and in several extra-pineal sites such as skin, gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidney, immune system, testis, and skeletal muscles [80]. Remarkably, during the last decade, the indole has been detected in several edible plants, eggs, and fish, assuming an interesting and promising role as a nutraceutical [81,82]. The compelling evidence of decreased endogenous melatonin in senescence triggered intense research on its potential role as a dietary supplement to prevent and treat aging and age-related diseases [83,84].…”

“…Some types of mushrooms, cereals, and germinating legumes or seeds are also good dietary sources of melatonin. The review prepared by Meng et al [98] presents a detailed list of products containing melatonin. It has been proven that products rich in melatonin such as pineapple, orange, or banana increase the concentration of circulating melatonin in human serum [99].…”
