The current study investigated the effects of dietary curcumin nanoparticles (C-NPs) on the performance, hemato-biochemical profile, digestive enzymes activities, antioxidant status, humoral immunity, and liver and intestinal histology of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish (4.3 ± 0.5 g) were fed with diets enriched with 0.0 (control), 15, 30, 45, and 60 mg C-NPs/kg diet up to apparent satiety thrice a day for 60 days. The growth-stimulating effects of dietary C-NPs were significantly observed in terms of final weight, weight gain %, specific growth rate, and feed intake. Compared with the control group, serum amylase, lipase, and proteases activities of Nile tilapia significantly (P < 0.05) increased alongside the increase in dietary levels of C-NPs in a dose-dependent manner. The counts of red blood cells and white blood cells as well as hemoglobin and hematocrit levels of Nile tilapia fed with 30–60 mg C-NPs/kg diet were statistically (P < 0.05) higher than fish in the control group with no significant differences among them (P > 0.05). Moreover, lymphocytes and monocytes significantly (P > 0.05) increased; meanwhile neutrophils significantly (P > 0.05) decreased as C-NPs levels in diets increased. In a similar trend, antioxidant (malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) and humoral immunity (lysozyme and total immunoglobulin) biomarkers were significantly higher in C-NPs-fed fish. Liver histology showed improvements in the cell architecture of fish fed with C-NPs containing diets up to 45 mg/kg diet. Compared with the control diet, feeding Nile tilapia with C-NPs diets resulted in a higher villi length/width and absorption area. According to the regression curves, the current study recommends using the dietary C-NP with optimum values of 45–55 mg/kg diet to improve the performance, digestive enzymes, antioxidant activities, and immunity response of Nile tilapia.

We have evaluated the impacts of supplementing diets with Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MOL) on growth, intestine histomorphometry, immunity, liver antioxidants and expression of immune genes in Nile tilapia raised in hapas mounted in earthen pond. Four MOL supplementation doses (0.0, 5.0, 7.0 and 9.0 g/kg) were used to make four experimental diets defined as reference (CONT), MOL5, MOL7 and MOL9 respectively. Fish (⁓61.5 g) were allocated in 4 triplicate groups and were fed the corresponding diets for consecutive 60 days. The highest final weight, weight gain, weight gain % and specific growth rate were found in the MOL5 group among all experimental groups. Feed conversion ratio was not changed by dietary MOL. When compared with the CONT group, there was a significant decline in MDA levels along with a significant rise in hepatic CAT, SOD and GPx enzymes in all MOL‐supplemented groups. Serum lysozyme activities, IgM levels and complement C3 were elevated in MOL groups than the CONT group. Moreover, dietary MOL preserved the normal histomorphology of the intestines of the treated Nile tilapia along with a significant improvement in some intestinal morphometric indices. There was significant increase in the mRNA expressions of inf‐γ, il‐10 and tnf‐α genes in the spleen tissue of MOL groups. However, the mRNA expression levels of il‐1β were significantly decreased in MOL groups. Of interest, the second‐order polynomial regression clarified that a 5.80 g MOL/kg diet is the optimum dietary supplementation level for better growth and no side effects on the health condition of fish. Altogether, dietary MOL could be recommended as a practical feed supplement to enhance growth, intestinal health, antioxidant capacity and immunity of Nile tilapia reared in hapas.

The present study aimed to unravel the effects of partial (50%; 50LSAqua) and total (100%; 100LSAqua) replacement of fish meal (FM) by a commercial protein source (LSAqua SusPro) made of bacterial and processed animal proteins (PAP) in farmed juveniles of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). The trial lasted 8 weeks, and the feasibility of replacement was assessed in terms of growth performance, histopathological scoring and composition of mucosal adherent microbiota from anterior intestine (AI). Specific growth rates (SGR) of 50LSAqua fish were undistinguishable from the CTRL group, whereas a slight but significant growth impairment was found with the total replacement. Histological signs of inflammation across the intestine were more evident at the highest level of FM replacement, and the total concentration of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) in stripped feces decreased in a dose dependent manner. Illumina sequencing of gut mucosal microbiota yielded a mean of 130,439 reads per sample assigned to 1,567 OTUs at 97% identity threshold. The bacterial richness was similar in all groups, but a significantly higher Simpson diversity index was found in 100LSAqua fish. At the phylum level, Proteobacteria were the most abundant in all groups, whereas Firmicutes decreased and Actinobacteria increased with the FM replacement. At a closer look, pro-inflammatory Gammaproteobacteria of the genus Psychrobacter, and Acinetobacter decreased with FM replacement, whereas the anti-inflammatory Paracoccus, Arthrobacter, and Actinomycetales increased, with a remarkable presence of the Propioniciclava genus in LSAqua groups. The inferred metagenome analysis suggested that these discriminant bacteria could be implicated in a counter-regulatory anti-inflammatory response. It also pointed to an over-representation of mucosal microbes that can potentially be involved in the natural production of antimicrobials in fish fed the experimental diets.
