Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids mediate the inverse association of stearoyl-CoA desaturase activity with the risk of fatty liver in dyslipidaemic individuals

Abstract: Total PUFA, regardless of their origin, mediates the relationship between SCD1 activity and NAFLD. This provides a new insight in the protective effects of PUFA against NAFLD, heretofore mostly focussed on PUFA species from marine origin.

“…Conversely, the novelty brought by our study was that JRVO supplementation decreased TG, T‐Ch, VLDL‐Ch, and LDL‐Ch levels, confirming its hypolipidemic effect. Along, JRVO was found to be rich in polyunsaturated acids especially α‐linolenic acid, which plays a role in the prevention of primary dyslipidemia in individuals . This reinforces the notion that consumption of the JRVO prevents hypercholesterolemia.…”

“…Along, JRVO was found to be rich in polyunsaturated acids especially α-linolenic acid, which plays a role in the prevention of primary dyslipidemia in individuals. 51 This reinforces the notion that consumption of the JRVO prevents hypercholesterolemia. Likewise, JRVO supplementation not only lowered the T-Ch, TG, and LDL-Ch but also increased the HDL-cholesterol, which is known to play an important role in the transport of cholesterol from peripheral cells to the liver by a pathway termed "reverse cholesterol transport".…”

“…Liver-specific Scd1-knock-out (SCD1-LKO) mice were resistant to such hepatic injury. In a recent cross-sectional clinical study, it has been shown that the serum SCD1 activity index is significantly related to the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in patients with primary dyslipidemia (35). Of course, while interpreting these data, it should be noted that the index of serum SCD1 activity is not solely determined by the liver.…”

“…Thus, the ratio of MUFA to SFA was elevated, consistent with the increased SCD1 expression level. The total MUFA may have been limited by increased levels of PUFA, which are known to inhibit MUFA synthesis and to reduce DNL [64].…”
