“…Several methods were used to assess dietary intake of F&V in the identified studies. The vast majority of the pan-European studies used FFQ (n 42) (27,29,30,36,41,48,50,52,(54)(55)(56)(58)(59)(60)(64)(65)(66)69,71,72,75,76,78,79,82,(84)(85)(86)88,93,104,109,110,(113)(114)(115)(116)120,139,146,150) . Since a common FFQ instrument was not used across all countries in the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) study, only the EPIC-SOFT instrument is discussed in the current review.…”

“…PM consultant Ragnar Rylander, a professor at Göteborg University, was selected to conduct a confounder study in Sweden,128 which was funded by CIAR129 after approval by its Board of Directors (comprised tobacco industry executives, including a representative of SM since 1994). The Swedish confounder study was eventually published in the European Journal of Public Health 130 without disclosing the tobacco industry's role in its sponsorship 131–135. SM also paid part of the expenses for two long-time industry consultants, Lee136–138 and LeVois,139–141 who Covington and Burling hired to attack the IARC study.…”

“…One tactic is to commission studies aimed at discrediting accepted findings: examples include studies that cast doubt on epidemiological findings, especially in relation to passive smoking, or which purport to identify other risk factors for ill health in active and passive smokers, such as a low intake of vegetables. 8 9 These studies are often open to criticism on methodological grounds: use of selective arguments and literature, inconsistency in the inclusion or omission of potentially biasing factors, playing with statistical inference rather than considering overall plausibility and weight of evidence, and drawing conclusions that are unwarranted by the evidence 1012. Such concerns may not prevent these studies from being published in international journals, where the peer review process has failed to address their methodological weaknesses.…”
