“…Les conflits d'inté-rêts dans la recherche sont donc un piège pour les scientifiques et une menace pour la société. Les solutions sont à débattre, on peut néanmoins noter quelques propositions simples (car radicales) à titre d'exemple : le simple fait qu'une étude ait été sponsorisée par l'industrie du tabac pourrait la rendre inéligible pour une publication dans une revue scientifique [5]. L'odeur du tabac serait donc proche de celle du soufre.…”

“…The case of the ‘nicotine monograph’ contributes to the debate about the ethics of accepting tobacco industry funding for research or scientific publication. Several organizations, including independent research funding agencies [101,102], scientific societies [103,104] and university research centers [102,105] require their members, grantees and affiliated researchers to reject tobacco‐industry funding [105]. Some are concerned that such policies may lead to banning of funds from other industries [104].…”
Our findings show the breadth of tobacco industry engagement in scientific knowledge production and dissemination, and its motives for sponsoring scientific literature. The industry's effort to gain credibility through collaboration with academic scientists raises questions regarding the ethics of accepting tobacco industry funding for publication. Scientists who collaborate on publications sponsored by the tobacco industry must consider the full implications of these joint efforts.
“…There is a well-documented, significant debate on whether tobacco industry-funded research or, as in this case, internal tobacco company research is ethical and whether it should be published in the scientific literature at all. 2,3 Philip Morris' companies and experts have a long history of involvement in this controversy. 4,5 On the plus side for this present study, the authors' conflicts of interest are up front, declared and not hidden.…”
Smokeless tobacco, as used in America or Europe, carries at most a minor increased risk of oral cancer, but elevated risks in specific populations or from specific products cannot definitely be excluded.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
