Dietary Folate and the Risk of Depression in Finnish Middle-Aged Men

Abstract: Background: Several cross-sectional studies have focused on the low blood folate levels of depressive patients. Nevertheless, no prospective studies have been published on the association between dietary folate and depression. Methods: We studied the association between dietary folate and cobalamin and receiving a discharge diagnosis of depression in a prospective follow-up setting. Our cohort was recruited between 1984 and 1989 and followed until the end of 2000, and it consisted of 2,313 men aged between 42a… Show more

“…[77] Aleksitimi skorlarının, klinik popülasyon-dakine kıyasla, klinik olmayan popülasyonda daha istikrarlı olması da bu bilgi ile tutarlı görünmektedir. [78][79][80] Ne var ki, aleksitiminin uzun süreli/kalıcı bir özellik mi yoksa geçici bir durum mu olduğu günümüzde hala netliğe kavuşamamış bir konudur.…”

“…In a large Finnish study, depressed patients in the general population with energy-adjusted folate intake below the median had a higher risk of getting a discharge diagnosis of depression during the followup period than those who had a folate intake above the median. A low dietary intake of folate may be a risk factor for severe depression (Tolmunen et al 2004). There has been some discussion in the recent literature regarding the possible relationship between peripheral levels of folate and serotonin deficiency in the CNS.…”

“…Administration of folic acid was also shown to be associated with early recovery from depression (Fava et al, 1997;Taylor et al, 2003), suggesting a therapeutic importance of this nutrient. A protective role of folate in depression has been further supported by various epidemiologic studies, in which either dietary folate intake (Tolmunen et al, 2003(Tolmunen et al, , 2004aSanchez-Villegas et al, 2006;Murakami et al, 2008) or blood folate concentrations (Bjelland et al, 2003;Morris et al, 2003;Ramos et al, 2004;Sachdev et al, 2005;Dimopoulos et al, 2007;Kim et al, 2008) or SNPs involved in folate metabolism (Gilbody et al, 2007a) was used as the exposure index. In a recent meta-analysis of 11 studies, persons with low levels of serum, low red blood cell or low intake of folate had a 1.4 times increased risk of depressive symptom, compared with those with high folate status (Gilbody et al, 2007b).…”
