Dietary flaxseed lignan extract lowers plasma cholesterol and glucose concentrations in hypercholesterolaemic subjects

Abstract: Lignans, derived from flaxseed, are phyto-oestrogens being increasingly studied for their health benefits. An 8-week, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in fifty-five hypercholesterolaemic subjects, using treatments of 0 (placebo), 300 or 600 mg/d of dietary secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) from flaxseed extract to determine the effect on plasma lipids and fasting glucose levels. Significant treatment effects were achieved (P,0·05 to ,0·001) for the decrease of total cholest… Show more

“…Zhang et al 37 verified the effect of different SDG doses in hypercholesterolemic individuals for eight weeks and they noticed HDL-c decrease. These results showed an increase of 14% in HDL-c concentrations in the supplemented group, but it was not a significant difference.…”

“…This result may indicate that the seed improves insulin sensitivity, thereby increasing glucose uptake. In a recent study, it was found that the flaxseed has hypoglycemic effect on diabetic rats 39 , and SDG present in flaxseed provides better glycemic control in hypercholesterolemic humans 37 . One possible cause for this glycemia reduction is the presence of SDG, which reduces diabetes incidence through its antioxidant activity.…”

“…Flaxseed contains at least three components that are of health interest: soluble fibers or mucilage (Diederichsen, 2006); high amounts of ALA (Choo, 2007); and the plant lignin secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (Johnsson et al, 2000). In addition, flaxseed also contains small amounts of other lignans, namely pinoresinol, lariciresinol, and matairesinol (Zhang et al, 2008). Even though secoisolariciresinol diglucoside is the predominant lignin in flaxseed, other minor lignans may also contribute to improved health benefits (Adolphe et al, 2010).…”

“…The enterolignans ED and EL have phytoestrogenic effects due to their similarity to 17β-estradiol, which regulates sex-specific functions, and may be involved in preventing some cancers (Muir & Wescott, 2003). SDG and its metabolites are known for their potential benefits to human health because they act as antioxidants (Hu, Yuan, & Kitts, 2007;Kitts, Yuan, Wijewickreme, & Thompson, 1999), reducing serum cholesterol levels and inhibiting the development of type I and II diabetes (Prasad, 2000;Zhang et al, 2008), and it has been proven that lignans can reduce the incidence of breast cancer and prostate cancer through modulation of the synthesis, bioavailability, and *Corresponding author.
