Dietary Fats and Depressive Symptoms in Italian Adults

Abstract: Background: Depression represents one of the major causes of disability worldwide, with an important socioeconomic cost. Although many risk factors have been considered in its pathogenesis, nutrition seems to play a determinant role in its prevention. With regard to individual macronutrients, dietary fats and especially n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) are the most studied. However, previous data about other dietary fatty acids, such as n-6 PUFA, are conflicting, and little is known about saturated f… Show more

“…[5,11] It has been found that erucic acid is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ligand that leads to improved cognitive parameters. [5,12] The effects of erucic acid as a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPAR-δ) ligand have been investigated in rotenone-induced PD model in zebrafish. [13] Erucic acid mediated modulation of membrane composition is associated with complex changes in lipid homeostasis that may affect amyloidogenic processing, providing an important target for lipid-based AD therapies.…”

“…[68] Arachidonic acid is a polyunsaturated essential fatty acid substrate for synthesizing prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes, mediating inflammatory processes and immune function, and acting as an antidepressant role. [69] The levels of phytosterols (canolesterol and stigmasterol), [70] and cholesterol were reduced in the SD group. Cholesterol has important structural roles in cell membranes and lipid metabolism and is a biosynthetic precursor of bile acids, vitamin D, and steroid hormones (glucocorticoids, estrogens, progesterone, androgens, and aldosterone).…”
