“…Thus, it is not surprising that a deficit of plasma antioxidants should impair the rapid, effective elimination of N. meningitidis from the nasopharynx. In line with our observations, other authors [13,14], have demonstrated in animal models an increase of the phagocytic activity of leukocytes associated with a diet enriched in antioxidants. A positive association between irritants, such as tobacco smoke or repeated pharyngeal infections, and asymptomatic carriage of N. meningitidis has also been reported [15], but the reasons for this are unclear, but doubtless involve the effectiveness of mucociliary clearance mechanisms and the phagocytic capacity of polymorphonuclear cells or increase of oxidative local stress.…”

“…Nutrition can aid in aging through changing the mRNA and immune system functions and may have a direct effect on influencing kidney health. It has been shown that dietary antioxidants, coupled with behavioral enrichment, enhance immune function as shown by neutrophil phagocytosis in older beagles [65]. In that intervention the dietary ingredients included were a milieu of antioxidants (Vitamins E, C, and alpha lipoic acid), combined with flavonoids and carotenoids from vegetables, as well as the mitochondrial cofactor L-carnitine.…”

“…The cell suspension was then immediately analyzed with flow cytometry. 22,23 Monochlorobimane Assay of GSH Monochlorobimane (mBCl) e is a nonfluorescent molecule that easily crosses cell membranes and forms a conjugation product with intracellular GSH. This conjugation product (mBCl-GSH) is fluorescent; therefore, the subsequent increase in fluorescence detected by flow cytometry represents the concentration of intracellular GSH.…”
