Dietary antioxidant capacity and concentration of adiponectin in apparently healthy adults: the ATTICA study

Abstract: Background/Objectives: This study aimed at evaluating the relationship of adiponectin concentration with total dietary antioxidant capacity in free-living, apparently healthy adults from the ATTICA study. Subjects/Methods: A random subsample from the ATTICA study, consisting of 310 men (40±11 years) and 222 women (38 ± 12 years), was selected. Adiponectin, along with other inflammatory markers, was measured in fasting participants. Dietary habits were evaluated using a food frequency questionnaire and the diet… Show more

“…Indeed, Lp-PLA 2 is positively associated with an increased ischemic stroke incidence among hormone replacement therapy (HRT) nonusers in postmenopausal women, in a fashion that is independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors (Hatoum et al 2010;Detopoulou et al 2009;Koenig et al 2004;Persson et al 2007;Iribarren et al 2005;Ballantyne et al 2005;Yang et al 2006;Khuseyinova et al 2004;Wassertheil-Smoller et al 2008). However, others have failed to observe a correlation between Lp-PLA 2 activity and inflammation.…”

“…Many studies have associated lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A 2 (Lp-PLA 2 ) with circulating triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol levels, body mass index (BMI), age, sex, postmenopausal hormone use, and smoking (Oei et al 2005;Brilakis et al 2005;Hatoum et al 2010;Detopoulou et al 2009;Koenig et al 2004;Persson et al 2007;Iribarren et al 2005;Ballantyne et al 2005;Yang et al 2006;Khuseyinova et al 2004). Lp-PLA 2 catalyzes oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) hydrolysis, w h i c h p r o d u c e s i n f l a m m a t o r y m e d i a t o r s , lysophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC), and oxidized fatty acid (MacPhee et al 1999).…”

“…Nutrient data for specific foods were obtained from the food composition database for epidemiological studies in Italy (Salvini et al, 1998) integrated with the TAC values of a number of foods representative of the average Italian diet, such as fruits, vegetables, oils, beverages, spices, dried fruits, sweets, cereals, pulses and nuts (Pellegrini et al, 2003(Pellegrini et al, , 2006. The TAC database has been widely validated in the Italian population (Brighenti et al, 2005;Valtueña et al, 2008;Del Rio et al, 2011) as well in Spanish (Agudo et al, 2007) and Greek populations (Detopoulou et al, 2010;Psaltopoulou et al, 2011).…”

“…While pioglitazone treatment increases adiponectin levels and is critical to reverse insulin resistance and improve liver histology in NASH patients [49], adiponectin expression was also shown induced by vitamin E via a peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor gamma-dependent mechanism [50]. Very recently, Detopoulou et al [51] have reported a positive association between diets with high antioxidant capacity and adiponectin levels which emphasize an adiponectin-mediated route through which antioxidant-rich foods are expected to exert beneficial effects. Therefore, in addition to the insulin-sensitizing and anti-inflammatory activity, our study exposes the antioxidant activity of adiponectin.…”
