Diet Quality and Satisfaction with Life, Family Life, and Food-Related Life across Families: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study with Mother-Father-Adolescent Triads

Abstract: Family is a major determinant of children’s and adolescents’ eating behavior. The objectives of the present study were to assess diet quality, eating habits, satisfaction with life, family life, and food-related life in mother–father–adolescent triads, and to identify profiles of families according to family members’ diet quality. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of 300 two-parent families with one child over the age of 10 in the city of Temuco (Chile), including the Adapted Healthy Eating Index (A… Show more

“…The current literature highlights the important role mothers play in influencing their children's eating habits, either positively by providing healthy food and encouraging healthy eating habits or negatively by skipping meals, thereby setting a bad example (Draxten et al, ; Giovannini et al, ; Hebestreit et al, ; Pearson, Williams, Crawford, & Ball, ; Winkler et al, ). Our findings are consistent with earlier research that confirms this maternal influence over adolescent eating habits (Loth, MacLehose, Larson, Berge, & Neumark‐Sztainer, ; Schnettler et al, ). As revealed by our results, the interrelationships between the maternal and adolescent variables related to breakfast consumption further highlight the pivotal role of mothers.…”

“…Growing evidence emphasizes the value of parental involvement in shaping adolescent eating behaviors and attitudes (Brown & Ogden, ; Draxten, Fulkerson, Friend, Flattum, & Schow, ; Ferris, Babskie, & Metzger, ; Hebestreit et al, ; Watts, Loth, Berge, Larson, & Neumark‐Sztainer, ; Winkler, Moore, Bennett, Armstrong, & Brandon, ). While the literature indicates that both mothers and fathers influence their children's eating behaviors (Ferris et al, ; Robinson, Rollo, Watson, Burrows, & Collins, ), some authors believe mothers have the greater influence in determining the quality of nutrition and dietary habits of adolescents (Schnettler et al, ; Winkler et al, ). This could be explained by the findings of Hebestreit et al () that suggest that mothers are more likely to follow dietary guidelines.…”

“…Although victimization has been linked to a number of adversities, one area that has received inadequate research attention is dietary habits (Albaladejo-Blazquez et al 2018;Jackson 2017). It is well-documented that unhealthy dietary patterns are associated with poor overall well-being (Jarman et al 2015;Schnettler et al 2017;Utter et al 2018). Interestingly, only a few studies have explored quality of dietary behavior and its relationship to bullying, and they reported mixed results.…”
