At an elephant camp in central Myanmar (Burma), we interviewed mahouts and veterinarians to describe the diet of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in a mixed-deciduous forest. Elephants showed a broad dietary breadth (103 plant species from 42 families); consumed mostly browse (94% of plant species); and were very selective about plant parts [e.g., many trees were eaten exclusively for their bark (22%) or fruits (14%)]. The fruits from 29 plant species were recorded to be eaten by elephants. Several of these were found as fruit remains, seeds, or seedlings in elephant dung, suggesting a role of Asian elephants in seed dispersal. Work elephants and their mahouts prove to be a rich source of information to understand wild elephant ecology.

Research of elephant conflict with community have been conducted in Sungai Menang ABSTRAKPenelitian konflik gajah dengan masyarakat telah dilakukan di Kecamatan Sungai Menang Kabupaten Ogan Komering Ilir, Provinsi Sumatera Selatan. Penelitian dilakukan di tiga desa pada bulan September 2015 sampai Desember 2015, dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi serta karakteristik sosial-ekonomi masyarakat terkait konflik terhadap nilai konservasi gajah. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara secara terstruktur, responden dipilih secara sengaja (purposive sampling). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat pendidikan masyarakat di Desa Gajah Mati dan Gajah Mulya masih rendah yaitu masing-masing 51% dan 47% merupakan lulusan SD, sedangkan tingkat pendidikan di Desa Gajah Mukti sebesar 58% adalah lulusan SMA. Mayoritas responden termasuk dalam kelas usia produktif dan bekerja sebagai petani ladang. Pendapatan rata-rata masyarakat di Desa Gajah Mati sebesar Rp1.814.583 per bulan, sedangkan di Desa Gajah Mukti dan Gajah Mulya masingmasing secara berurutan adalah Rp1.158.750 dan Rp1.060.833. Gangguan gajah terjadi di semua desa responden, dan berdampak pada persepsi masyarakat terhadap konservasi gajah menjadi negatif. Sebagian besar responden menginginkan gajah dipindahkan ke Suaka Margasatwa Padang Sugihan yang merupakan habitat gajah.

Elephants are capable of dispersing seeds in the wild and hence, have the potential to affect the vegetation dynamics of forests. Only few studies have been conducted in Sri Lanka to study the seed dispersal capability of wild elephants. Thus, this study was initiated to determine the diversity of plant species that are dispersed by the elephants in Kumaragala forest reserve, Central Sri Lanka. Dung piles were searched twice a month and three dung boli were collected randomly from each dung pile. Visible seeds were identified by comparing with a reference seed collection. A total of 84 dung piles were recorded from September 2014 to February 2015. Fifty three dung piles out of 84 (63.1%) contained seeds or seedlings of one or more plant species. Most of the dung piles were found in relatively undisturbed areas of the study site. Twenty two plant species; 15 cultivated (68.2%) and seven non-cultivated (31.8%) plants belonging to nine families were identified from dung boli. Careya arborea, Megathyrsus maximus and Mimosa pudica were the most commonly noted seedlings. The findings of this study prove that elephants assist in dispersing seeds of some plant species in Kumaragala forest reserve area.
