Diet and Skin Barrier: The Role of Dietary Interventions on Skin Barrier Function

Abstract: Multiple research studies have examined the role of specific dietary interventions and their effects on skin barrier function. The skin barrier is one of the body's first lines of protection against environmental insults, and disruption of this natural line of defense can result in xerosis, irritation, chronic dermatitis, and other cutaneous effects. Multiple laboratory, animal, and human studies have demonstrated that certain dietary interventions have the potential to impact skin barrier function. Measuremen… Show more

“…Similar results were presented by A.I. Nicoara et al [ 39 ], who observed that silver enhancement increases the SPF significantly, especially when compared to the pristine samples. For the emulsion with the model physical filter, which was TiO 2 , the time before the application was 29 min; after application, the time of natural sun protection was extended by 4 min, while after water bathing, a similar value was recorded as before the application of the cosmetic, which was 30 min on average.…”

“…The skin barrier is the first line of defence against environmental pollutants. 1 The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin and is damaged by long-term exposure to environmental pollutants, resulting in oxidative stress and skin ageing. 2 One of epidemiological studies have shown that air pollution, including exposure to particulate matter (PM), sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, is closely related to the incidence of skin diseases.…”

“…All above-mentioned health issues are partly related to diets in healthy populations [ [18] , [19] , [20] , [21] , [22] ]. Constipation is inversely associated with the Japanese traditional diet, including a high intake of rice, miso soup, and soybean with limited intake of bread and confectionaries [ 19 ].…”
