Dielectric spectroscopy measurements on kaolin suspensions for sediment concentration monitoring

Abstract: Sedimentation along with consolidation processes dictate the in situ engineering and hydraulic behavior of a particulate system such as soil. With this in view, the present investigation discusses about the application of dielectric measurements in relation to sediment concentration measurements for fine grained soils. An in-house set up comprising of open ended coaxial probes and vector network analyzer has been used to measure the dielectric behavior of kaolin suspensions in tap and deionized water. These ha… Show more

“…Firstly, kaolin has relatively low shear strength and often requires some form of treatment or reinforcement to support applied loads. Also, kaolin is readily available commercially, and its information database is extensive due to the large number of studies involving its use (Mishra et al, 2018a;Mishra et al, 2018b;Mishra et al, 2020;Rossato et al, 1992). The novelty of this paper is that it compares the shear strength behaviour of geocomposites containing a CWG column with those containing a column made up of NS or MS, which are traditionally used in sand column construction (Zukri and Nazir, 2018).…”

“…The CWG used in this study was sourced from a commercial supplier, Enviro Sand, in Brisbane, Australia. The kaolin used had a median particle diameter of 0.0012 mm (Mishra et al 2018(Mishra et al , 2020Mishra and Scheuermann 2021). Several researchers have previously studied various geotechnical parameters of kaolin (Bore et al 2021;Bore et al 2016a, Bore, Wagner, & Scheuermann, 2016;Mishra et al 2019).…”

“…Please note that OE probe has been extensively used for soils and rocks application the last decades. The authors have been using this methodology for different soil type: suspensions [67] or clayey soft soils [68].…”
