Dielectric response of the charge-ordered two-dimensional nickelate La1.5Sr0.5NiO4

Abstract: We are reporting the dielectric response of La 1.5 Sr 0.5 NiO 4 , a system that presents a charge-ordered state above room temperature and a rearrangement of its charge-order pattern in the temperature region 160-200 K. A careful analysis of the role of the electric contacts used, sample thickness and grain size on the experimental data allows us to determine that this material exhibits high values of intrinsic dielectric constant. The variation of the dielectric constant with temperature shows a maximum in the… Show more

“…For example, the recent discovery (1,2) of "colossal" values of the dielectric constant, ε', up to about 10 5 in CaCu 3 Ti 4 O 12 (CCTO) has aroused tremendous interest and a huge number of publications deals with its investigation and optimization. Aside of the extensively investigated CCTO, there are also some reports of other colossal-ε' materials (e.g., refs.…”

“…Aside of the extensively investigated CCTO, there are also some reports of other colossal-ε' materials (e.g., refs. (3,4,5,6,7)), mainly transition metal oxides. While there is no clear definition, the term "colossal" typically denotes values of ε' > 10 4 .…”

“…At higher frequencies tanδ exponentially decreases up to reach values ranged between 2 and 10. These high dielectric charge condensation that takes place in some systems with cations of variable valence, such as Ni (8,9). The extrinsic factors are associated to the interfacial polarization produced in grain boundaries and contacts sample-electrode (7).…”

“…The first evidence of this link has been reported by F. Rivadulla et al (10) (12). Nevertheless, only very recently their dielectric behavior starts to attract attention (13,14). In the context of charge ordering (CO) both compounds are examples of CO by stripe order.…”
