Otherness in contemporary cross-cultural management (CCM) studies often emerges from migration and refugee movements, with ensuing integration challenges. In this context, ‘difference’ is perceived as being more problematic than enriching, and this makes it difficult to contribute to integration via a Positive Organizational Scholarship. Introducing the sociology of conflict, I propose that the success of a positive cross-cultural management engagement with Otherness should not be measured in terms of the degree to which difference is overcome and integrated, but in terms of the degree to which more parties engage more deeply with relevant conflict and friction. Investigating Otherness by means of a sociology of conflict approach thus radically changes the assumptions, research agendas, practices, presumed goals and potential responsibilities of a contemporary cross-cultural management theory and practice: deeper conflict signifies better integration, and assuming otherwise is both unrealistic and mis-fitting. I exemplify this reverse logic, and how to employ it, with a discussion of the ‘refugee crisis’ and the dynamics of ‘migration background’ in Germany. Thus reconfigured, integration in Germany emerges as more successful than is commonly believed.

Sufism is known as the mystical dimension of Islam. Breathing Hearts explores this definition to find out what it means to ‘breathe well’ along the Sufi path in the context of anti-Muslim racism. It is the first book-length ethnographic account of Sufi practices and politics in Berlin and describes how Sufi practices are mobilized in healing secular and religious suffering. It tracks the Desire Lines of multi-ethnic immigrants of color, and white German interlocutors to show how Sufi practices complicate the post secular imagination of healing in Germany.

Geflüchtete aus der Ukraine wurden direkt nach Beginn des russischen Angriffskrieges Ende Februar 2022 in vielen europäischen Ländern mit überwältigender Solidarität empfangen, auch in Deutschland. Hat sich die Haltung der Menschen seitdem verändert? In diesem DeZIM.insights Working Paper analysieren wir die Unterstützungsbereitschaft im ersten Jahr nach Kriegsbeginn.Hierzu greifen wir auf Daten des DeZIM.panels zurück und untersuchen, wie sich die Solidarität in den Bereichen freiwilliges Engagement, Spendenbereitschaft sowie Bereitschaft, Geflüchtete im eigenen Zuhause aufzunehmen, zwischen März 2022 und Januar 2023 entwickelt hat. Unsere Befunde belegen, dass die Bereitschaft weiterhin hoch ist, Geflüchtete aus der Ukraine auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise zu unterstützen. Von März bis Juli 2022 beobachten wir eine moderate Abnahme, die sich jedoch von Juli 2022 bis Januar 2023 nicht fortsetzt.Überdies stellen wir fest, dass die Menschen in Deutschland schärfere Sanktionen im Januar 2023 außerordentlich deutlich unterstützten – selbst, wenn sie zu finanziellen Belastungen führen würden. Unsere Daten deuten folglich in keiner Weise darauf hin, dass die Stimmung gegenüber ukrainischen Geflüchteten gekippt sei oder dass sich ein solcher Kipppunkt unmittelbar abzeichnet.
