“…From the methanol extract of S. staminea, we isolated the new triterpenoid, 3b,11a,21a-trihydroxyurs-12-ene (1), together with three flavones apigenin (2), luteolin (3), apigenin 7-O-glucoside (4), and sitosterol 3b-D-glucoside (5). The acetone extract yielded the two sesquiterpenes spathulenol (6) [4], and caryophyllene oxide (7) [5], the two steroids b-sitosterol (8) and stigmast-4-en-3-one (9) [6], the triterpenoid oleanolic acid 3b-acetate (10) [7], and the six diterpenes, ferruginol (11), taxodione (12) [8], microstegiol (13) [9], manoyloxide (14) [10],1-oxo-salvibretol (15) [9], cryptojaponol (16) [11] and the flavone apigenin 7,4¢-methyl ether (17).…”

“…At the present time, the chemical composition of the essential oil of 0. majorana cultivated in Egypt (2,3,4) or in various other countries (5,6,7) is well known. In the herb, the presence of n-triacontane and 3-sitosterol (8), oleanolic and ursolic acids (9), rosmarinic acid (10) flavonoids and hydroquinone (11), and tannins (12) is also recorded in the literature. But to our knowledge, diphenol glucosides were not yet described in 0. majorana herb.…”

“…Since luteolin and its derivatives are known to have spasmolytic action (1,2), their presence in this species, as reported here, may account for its use as a folk medicine. Salvia species have been studied for triterpene acids (3,4), triterpene alcohols (5,6), diterpenes (7)(8)(9)(10)(11), and flavonoids (12)(13)(14). This is the first chemical investigation of Salvia tomentosa.…”
