The intrinsic and the free carrier absorption has been investigated in thin a-Ag,S films as a function of carrier concentration. By producing an excess of silver the electron concentration in a-Ag,S increases from the intrinsic concentration value n, = np=1.2 x 1OI8 up to we = 3.6 x 10lg cm-3 (at 200 "C). Since the silver to sulfur ratio cannot be frozen in, either the chemical potential of silver or that of sulfur must be fixed by external conditions during the measurements. From the spectral dependence of the dielectric constant direct transitions (A&irecf,= 0.87 eV), the conduction band mass (m,* = 0.24 m,) and the scattering mechanism of the electrons (scattering by charged centres) were determined. It was not possible to deduce the band gap ( w 0.1 eV from electrical data) from optical measurements.Die Eigenabsorption und die Absorption durch freie Ladungstrager wurden an dunnen a-Ag,S-Schichten a19 Funktion der Elektronenkonzentration untersucht. Diese Konzentration 1aBt sich durch SilberuberschuB von den Werten der Eigenleitung n, = np = = 1,2x 10l8 ~m -~ bis maximal n,=3,6 x 1019 0111-3 (jeweils bei 200 "C) erhohen. Da sich dasSilber-Schwefel-Verhaltnis nicht einfrieren laDt, wurde entweder das chemische Potential des Silbers oder das des Schwefels wahrend der Messung von auBen vorgegeben. Aus dem spektralen Verlauf der Dielektrizitiitskonstante wurden direkte Ubergange (AEdirekt = =0,87 eV), die effektive Masse im Leitungsband (m,*=0,24 m,) und der Streumechanismus der Elektronen (Streuung an geladenen Storstellen) bestimmt. Der Bandabstand ( w 0,l eV aus elektrischen Messungen) konnte optisch nicht bestimmt werden.

Solid State Ionics has its roots essentially in Europe. First foundations were laid by Michael Faraday who discovered the solid electrolytes Ag2S and PbF2 and coined terms such as cation and anion, electrode and electrolyte. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the main lines of development toward Solid State Ionics, pursued in Europe, concerned the linear laws of transport, structural analysis, disorder and entropy and the electrochemical storage and conversion of energy. Fundamental contributions were then made by Walther Nernst, who derived the Nernst equation and detected ionic conduction in heterovalently doped zirconia, which he utilized in his Nernst lamp. Another big step forward was the discovery of the extraordinary properties of alpha silver iodide in 1914. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the concept of point defects was established by Yakov Il'ich Frenkel, Walter Schottky and Carl Wagner, including the development of point-defect thermodynamics by Schottky and Wagner. In terms of point defects, ionic (and electronic) transport in ionic crystals became easy to visualize. In an ‘evolving scheme of materials science’, point disorder precedes structural disorder, as displayed by the AgI-type solid electrolytes (and other ionic crystals), by ion-conducting glasses, polymer electrolytes and nano-composites. During the last few decades, much progress has been made in finding and investigating novel solid electrolytes and in using them for the preservation of our environment, in particular in advanced solid state battery systems, fuel cells and sensors. Since 1972, international conferences have been held in the field of Solid State Ionics, and the International Society for Solid State Ionics was founded at one of them, held at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in 1987.

Gehurtstage gewidrnet Inhaltsubersieht Es wurden die Phasenumwandlungen im System Kupfer-Antiinon untersucht, welche beim Konzentrationsausgleich in dunu ubereinander aufgedampften Cu-Sb-Doppelschichten auftreten. Die Registricruug der Strukturanderungen erfolgte mit einer kontinuierlich arbeitenden Elektronenbeugungskamera, in der das Praparat zur Beschleunigung der Diffusion und zur Aufnahme polymorpher Umwandlungen bei hiiheren Temperaturen beheizt werden konnte. Bei der Diffusion ent,steht zunachst immer Cu,Sb, das dann in diejenigen Phasen iibergeht, welche der Endkonzentration entspreehen. Die Auswertung der DEBYE-SGHERRER-Diagralnme ermoglichte eine Abschiitzung der Iliffusionskonstanten. I n Ubereinstimmung mit anderen Autoren wurden folgende Strukturen bestimmt : Cu,Sb einfach tetragond (a = 4,OO A, cia = 1,525), die Hochterriperaturphase kubischer Unterstrukturzelle (a = 3,OO d) und die A 3-Hochtemperaturphase q (Cu,,,Sb) hexagonal dichtest gepackt (a = 2,68 if, cia = 1,605). flachenzentriert kubisch (a = 6,OO A) mit raumzent,riertFur die &Phase (Cu,,,Sb) wird eine Uberstruktur des A3-Grundgitters angenoinmen, die in einer Koordination dreier nachster Sb-Nachbarn zu jedem Sb-Atom unter Wahrnng des homoopolaren Valenzwinkels besteht. Diese Teilordnung fuhrt zu einer bevorsugten Anordnung der Sb-Atome auf den (2 0 2)-Ebenen dcs Uberstrukturgitters, das durch Vervierfachung der a-Achse nnd Verdopplung der c-Achse aus der A3-Unterstruktur entsteht. In dem Bereich der von SCHUBERT und ILSCHNER angegebenen %-Phase wurde eine AS-Uberstruktur gefunden, welche wahrscheinlich aus der &Phase durch vollstandige Ordnung der Sb-Atome in der gleichen Uberstrukturzelle entsteht. Diese Ordnung sol1 dadurch gekennzeichnet sein, daIj fur die Vernetzung der Sb-Atome innerhalb jedes Koharenzbereiches eine Schar von (2 0 2)-Ebenen bevorzugt wird.Das groBe zeitliche Auflosungsvermogen der gewahlten Aufnahrneanordnung ermoglichte einen Einblick in alle Einzelheiten der Umwandlungsvorgange und erlaubte es, das Verhalten der Phasen bei Temperaturen oberhalb ihrer Stabilitatsgrenzen zu untersuchen.
