This article presents an English translation and analysis of a new historical fragment, probably from Dexippus’Scythica, published by Gunther Martin and Jana Grusková in 2014. The fragment, preserved in a palimpsest in the Austrian National Library, describes a Gothic attack on Thessalonica and the subsequent preparations of the Greeks to repel the barbarian force as it moved south into Achaia. The new text provides several important details of historical, prosopographical and historiographical significance, which challenge both our existing understanding of the events in Greece during the reign of Gallienus and the reading of the main literary sources for this period. In this article we look to secure the Dexippan authorship of the fragment, identify the individuals named in the text, and date the events described in the text to the early 260sa.d.

For 50 years (between 235 and 284), the Roman empire experienced an unprecedented succession of challenges. Some were external, such as the expansionary ambitions of the Sasanids in the east and the pressure from tribes on the Danube and Rhine frontiers, and others (even more dangerous) were internal, as unsuccessful emperors were repeatedly challenged by their leading generals. In the 260 s the empire appeared to be fragmenting as Palmyra took control of much of the eastern frontier while Gaul was controlled by separatist emperors. Eventually energetic campaigning by Aurelian stabilized the situation.

Born May 10, perhaps in 214, in one of the Danubian provinces (the Historia Augusta claims Dalmatia or Dardania), Claudius II ( PLRE I 209; PIR 2 A 1626; RE 82) was Roman emperor from (September?) 268 until his death in (August?) 270, and most noteworthy for virtually concluding the campaign against the invading Goths, thereby removing for many decades any serious threat they posed to Roman security.
