The Third‐Century “Crisis”

Abstract

For 50 years (between 235 and 284), the Roman empire experienced an unprecedented succession of challenges. Some were external, such as the expansionary ambitions of the Sasanids in the east and the pressure from tribes on the Danube and Rhine frontiers, and others (even more dangerous) were internal, as unsuccessful emperors were repeatedly challenged by their leading generals. In the 260 s the empire appeared to be fragmenting as Palmyra took control of much of the eastern frontier while Gaul was controlled by separatist emperors. Eventually energetic campaigning by Aurelian stabilized the situation.

“…Por todo ello, se puede afirmar que desde 235 hasta 285 los momentos de calma resultaron la excepción en una época convulsa. Aunque ciertas áreas del Imperio se vieron mucho menos afectadas que otras durante la denominada "Anarquía Militar", por obvios motivos geopolíticos, la proliferación de rebeliones militares está fuera de toda duda (Alföldy, 1974;Birley, 1976;Fernández Ubiña, 1982;Hartmann, 2017;Omissi, 2018;Walser, 1965). Trataremos de mostrar el desarrollo de estas maquinaciones, golpes, y/o revueltas ofreciendo un esquema general en base a los testimonios de las fuentes literarias.…”
