“…Often these follicles have been called parathyroid cysts. Typical cysts in parathyroid glands have been reported before only occasionally (Godwin, 1937b;Rother and Wendler, 1968;Pemsingh et al, 1985). The differences between the cysts in parathyroid I11 and these in parathyroid IV have been clarified in the present study.…”

“…Pearse et al (1972) suggested that the autofluorescence of some amyloids is due to tryptophan, tryptophan metabolites, or possibly to transfer of the excited state from nearby tyrosine molecules (Kronman and Holmes, 1971). Rother (1970) believes that some parathyroid follicles are involved in the production or storage of hormone, but the nature of the hormone is uncertain. Leedham and Pollock (1970) favoured an association of amyloid with calcitonin production, a process for which there is some evidence from human parathyroid gland extracts (Galante, Gudmundsson, Matthews, Tse, Williams, Woodhouse, and Mac-Intyre, 1968) despite lack of histological evidence for cells of the APUD system in human parathyroid glands.…”
