Diarylheptanoids as nutraceutical: A review

Abstract: Phenolic compounds are naturally occurring compounds present ubiquitously in plants. They have potential health benefits and substantiate evidence for their nutraceutical applications. Diarylheptanoids are part of the broad class of plant phenolics with structurally divergent compounds. They have been used in traditional medicines and homemade remedies to treat various ailments, as organoleptic additives in foods, and also for aesthetic purposes. With their potential therapeutic and organoleptic characteristic… Show more

“…Plant-derived compounds have been used in traditional herbal medicine for treating inflammation ( Chao et al, 2010 , Kohli et al, 2005 ). Several diarylheptanoids obtained from different plant sources were previously reported for their pharmacological properties, which were extensively reviewed ( Ganapathy et al, 2019 ). Previously, Curcumin isolated from the Curcuma longa was reported for its anti-inflammatory potential in both acute and chronic models of inflammation and its anti-inflammatory efficacy was found to be similar to phenylbutazone ( Hewlings and Kalman, 2017 , Srimal and Dhawan, 1973 ).…”

“…Diarylheptanoids are phenolic compounds with a skeletal structure of two aromatic rings conjugated with seven carbon chains [ 40 ]. Diarylheptanoids have been used as nutraceuticals due to their broad array of health-promoting properties [ 41 ]. Among nutraceuticals, curcumin is an important diarylheptanoid compound, which has been studied widely for its role in protection against many diseases [ 42 ].…”

“…A variety of compounds are present, including diarylheptanoids, dihydrochalcones, triterpenoids and flavonoids, but the majority of the bioactive compounds obtained from Morella and Myrica genera are cyclic diarylheptanoids, a class of compounds known by their wide array of biological activities [63]. From the analysis of Table 1 it is also clear that the compounds which have been more widely studied are myricanone (1), myricanol (4), quercitrin (9), myricitrin (10), and betulin (16), so details about the most interesting works and compounds from Table 1 will be discussed in the following paragraphs.…”
