Diapause, signal and molecular characteristics of overwintering Chilo suppressalis (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Abstract: Diapause is a complex and dynamic process. Chilo suppressalis, an important rice pest in Asia enters facultative diapause as larvae. Our results demonstrated in Yangzhou, China, diapause was initiated between September 4 and 12, 2010. After diapause termination, C. suppressalis remained in quiescence in the field for as long as three months. The average time between collection of field larvae of C. suppressalis and their pupation decreased as the season progressed from fall to next spring. Unexpectedly, the pu… Show more

“…Accumulated energy reserves are essential to allow insects to withstand these various kinds of stress17. Hsps can increase the ability of insects to withstand environmental stress, including extremes of temperature, crowding, starvation, and hypoxia/anoxia, and are generally differentially expressed during diapause18383940. We speculated, therefore, that energy reserves, especially stored lipids, may promote Hsps expression during diapause.…”

“…Diapause is a dynamic developmental arrest, accompanied with metabolic depression and enhanced stress tolerance12. It also increases their chance of mating by synchronizing the growth rates of population which ultimately plays a vital role in insect survival23. There are two kinds of diapause (obligatory diapause and facultative diapause) and three type of eco-physiological phases including pre-diapause, diapause and post-diapause45.…”
