Diallel Analysis of Some Important Grain Yield Traits in Bread Wheat Crosses

Abstract: One of the most important tasks in wheat breeding program is development of high yielding wheat cultivars by crossing the lines with good general combining ability (GCA) and selecting desirable genotypes within its segregating population for grain yield traits. The objective of this study was to estimate the combining ability and gene action involved in the expression of the traits grain weight per spike and grain weight per plant of wheat in F 1 generations, in 5 × 5 half diallel cross of bread wheat varietie… Show more

“…The GCA / SCA ratios were found to be greater than unity, suggesting that, the additive gene effect was much larger and more important than non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of these traits. These results are in agreement with those obtained by Burungale et al, (2011) Mandal and Madhuri (2016) and Ljubičić et al, (2017). It is interesting to note that breeding procedures that take advantage of additive genetic variance would be recommended for wheat breeding programs to improve tolerance for water stress traits.…”

“…At the same time, global demand for wheat is estimated to increase by 2050, as a consequence of growing dietary requirements of an increasing world population [ 23 ]. Keeping this in view, the wheat breeders have to share an urgent need to increase wheat grain yield potential by developing new wheat varieties with desirable genetic make-up [ 24 , 25 ]. Considering that much more attention needs to be given not only to the quantity, one of the greatest challenges to wheat breeders is to obtain a wheat genotypes with high mean yield and wide adaptation to the various environments, even in less productive soils, such as a solonetz soil type.…”
