Diagrammatic scale to evaluate angular leaf spot severity in primary leaves of common bean

Abstract: The aim of this study was to develop a diagrammatic scale to evaluate angular leaf spot (ALS) severity in primary leaves of common bean. A diagrammatic scale was developed and validated with nine levels of severity: 0 %; 0.1 to 0.5 %; 0.6 to 4.0 %; 4.1 to 7.0 %; 7.1 to 16 %; 16.1 to 26 %; 26.1 to 32 %; 32.1 to 38 % and 38.1 to 60 %. The use of this scale, associated with the early inoculation method, allowed rating of ALS severity in common bean leaves in the V2 stage of development that is, when the primary l… Show more

“…As for the evaluated hypotheses for the intercept (b 0 ) and the slope (b 1 ), they had more rejections in leaves and calyces when the scales were not used (Tables 1 and 2), similar results have been obtained by other authors Librelon et al, 2015). In the first evaluation with scale in leaves, two slope values were different from 1.…”

“…Respecto a las hipótesis evaluadas para el intercepto (b 0 ) y la pendiente (b 1 ), se observaron más rechazos en hojas y cálices cuando no se utilizaron las escalas (Cuadros 1 y 2); otros autores han obtenido resultados similares Librelon et al, 2015). En la primera evaluación en hojas con el uso de la escala, dos valores de la pendiente fueron diferentes de 1.…”

“…Early evaluation of common bean plants, or V2 stage, has been proposed to evaluate simultaneously a large number of genotypes in germoplasm banks (Pereira et al, 2011;Librelon et al, 2015;Pádua et al, 2016). Many progenies are evaluated especially in early stages of breeding programs and plants evaluation in V3 stage is unfeasible.…”

“…On the other hand, diagrammatic scales or standard area diagram sets (SADs) not only improve the accuracy and the precision of disease evaluations, but also demonstrate significant improvements in the visual estimates of severity (Damasceno et al, 2014;De Paula et al, 2016;Santos et al, 2017). Thus, they are valuable tools in breeding programs, whose success is achieved depending on the exact and accurate use of quantification methods of disease severity and selection of resistant materials (Librelon et al, 2015).…”
