Diagnostic value of MR imaging in comparison to CT in the detection and differential diagnosis of renal masses: ROC analysis

Abstract: The aim of this work was to compare MR imaging and CT in the detection of renal masses and in the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant lesions. In 33 patients with 54 renal lesions CT and MR images were evaluated by four readers with regard to tumor detection and characterization using a receiver-operating-characteristics (ROC) analysis. The MRI protocol consisted of a T1-weighted spin-echo (SE) sequence (TR/TE: 300/10 ms) before and after contrast administration and a heavily T2-weighted turbo-… Show more

“…Calcifications or calculi are difficult visualize with MR imaging [13,15,16], but this can be assessed by ultrasonography and/or a plain abdominal radiograph. The accuracy of MR imaging in the diagnosis of renal parenchymal lesions, such as cysts and tumors, has been demonstrated in other studies [25,26].…”

“…For MRI, no such data exists. In the overall detection and differential diagnosis of renal masses, CT and MRI have been shown to be equal [85]. Thus, in the case of most tumors, the general algorithm for early detection is not clearly defined and is experiencing a change at the present time.…”

“…Wichtig im Zusammenhang mit dem Staging bei Nierenzellkarzinomen ist die Beurteilung der renalen Gefäßsituation, insbesondere die Abklärung einer möglichen Aus diesem Grund und wegen der schon erwähnten multiplanaren Schichtorientierung sowie des hohen Weichteilkontrastes kann die MRT bezüglich des prä-und postoperativen Stagings maligner Nierenerkrankungen als das bildgebende Verfahren der Wahl angesehen werden [9].…”
