Diagnostic Value ofBrucellaELISA IgG and IgM in Bacteremic and Non-Bacteremic Patients with Brucellosis

Abstract: The diagnostic value of Brucella ELISA IgG and IgM has been evaluated in patients with brucellosis. Serum samples and blood cultures were collected from 83 patients with brucellosis. The sera were tested by Brucella ELISA for Brucella IgM and IgG antibodies. All 44 controls were negative for IgG and IgM. Brucella melitensis was isolated from blood cultures of 30/83 (36.1%) patients. Among the 30 bacteremic patients, 24 (80%) had an increased IgM titer of > or = 200. Of the 53 non-bacteremic patients, 41 had Ig… Show more

“…However, very few comparative publications are available on the evaluation of ELISA in bacteriologically proven cases and the standard serological tests for brucellosis. 11,12 Therefore, the focal points of this work were to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ELISA with culture and classical serological methods [SAT and 2-mercaptoethanol (ME) test], which are currently accepted tests for microbiological diagnosis of brucellosis, as well as to determine the utility of ELISA in an area where brucellosis is endemic.…”

“…This finding was also supported by Osoba et al, who confirmed from their study that ELISA IgG was an effective method in diagnosing Brucella infection. [37] From this study, a sensitivity of 66.7%, specificity of 55. [18,38] Queipo-Ortuno and others also made use of the same primers, B4/B5 primer, amplifying a 223-bp fragment of the bcsp31 gene and found 100% sensitivity and 98.3% specificity as compared with 70% constituents of blood culture.…”

“…Elisa test is a relatively new one diagnostic test has been studied in several studies. Its specificity and sensitivity has been reported as high as 100% (6)(7)(8)10 with Wright test. This shows that using Elisa test has decreased false negative results of diagnostic tests.…”

“…For this reason, we decided to compare the diagnostic value of these traditional serological tests with more modern ones like Elisa. Its' sensitivity for Brucella has been reported as 96 to98.2% in different studies, and its specificity as 98.8 to 100% (8,10). Meanwhile several studies recommend simultaneous use of these traditional and modern serological tests (11).…”
