Diagnostic validity of methods for assessment of swallowing sounds: a systematic review

Abstract: Based on limited evidence and low methodological quality because few studies were included, with a small sample size, from all index testes found for this systematic review, doppler showed excellent diagnostic accuracy for the discrimination of swallowing sounds, whereas microphone-reported good accuracy discrimination of swallowing sounds of dysphagic patients and stethoscope showed best screening test.

“…A number of screening tools have been developed for different groups of patients with neurological, structural, and inflammatory disease [84][85][86]. Some screenings have also been used in patients after extubation, but without demonstrating their sensitivity and specificity in this group of patients [27,87].…”

“…Among the 91 individuals (100%), 38 (41.7%) presented with a Moderate Dysphagia in the instrumental videofluoroscopic swallow study, according to the Ott scale (Ott et al, 1996). One study considered the videofluoroscopy exam as a swallowing evaluation reference (Taveira et al, 2018), but research mentions that the ultrasound exam can also be applied to visualize the temporal relationship between structural movements of the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing (Pflug et al, 2018).…”

“…Cervical auscultation by Sonar Doppler associated with acoustic swallowing analysis is a non-invasive technique, without radiation exposure, of easy applicability and low cost, with credibility gain in clinical swallowing evaluation (Santos & Macedo Filho, 2006;Taveira et al, 2018). “…Detailed information on search strategies is provided in Appendix A. Searches were exported to Mendeley software for later removal of duplicated articles and subsequently exported further to systematic review management software (Ouzzani et al, 2016). Manual searches were also carried out on the bibliographic references (Greenhalgh & Peacock, 2005), as well as consultation with specialists, in order to identify new studies (Taveira et al, 2018). The searches in the databases were carried out on August 28, 2019, and updated on January 09, 2020, and July 19, 2020, using the same descriptors and databases of the first search.…”
