Diagnostic Intraocular Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy? An Experience in Three Cases of Retinoblastoma

Abstract: Ophthalmoscopically guided intraocular fine‐needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) under general anesthesia was performed in three suspected cases of retinoblastoma (Rb). The first case presented with uveitis and the second with unusual radiological features. The third case had classical clinical features of bilateral Rb but the parents refused enucleation. After a cytologic diagnosis of retinoblastoma, two cases were subjected to enucleation and a histologic confirmation was obtained. The present article discusses t… Show more

“…Intra ocular fine needle aspiration (FNAB) cytology under general anesthesia can be a viable option in making a diagnosis of retinoblastoma in selected cases. [35] Ratios of aqueous to plasma lactate dehydrogenase enzyme is high in eyes with retinoblastoma. [2] The technique is minimally invasive.…”

“…If a Rb is suspected FNAB and vitrectomy are contraindicated. Nevertheles for some authors FNAB is considered a viable diagnostic choice in selected cases of leukocoria when conventional investigative modalities are inconclusive or when the patient of suspected Rb refuses enucleation [15]. If a case of Rb is punctured and confirmed by pathology, enucleation must be performed immediatly.…”
