Diagnostic fine-needle puncture of the gallbladder with US guidance.

Abstract: From February 1988 to January 1990, 118 fine-needle diagnostic punctures of the gallbladder (DPG) were performed under continuous ultrasound (US) guidance on symptomatic patients with gallstones. The first attempt at gallbladder puncture and aspiration was successful in every patient with use of a 22-gauge needle and continuous US visualization of the needle tip. The aspirated volume varied between 3 and 88 mL (average +/- standard deviation, 25.0 mL +/- 15.3). Biliary analysis revealed an elevation of the cho… Show more

“…This latter needle might be long enough for larger canine breeds, as well. We did not use any mandrin when penetrating the abdominal wall, liver and gallbladder, but this might be also applied as described earlier (Swobodnik et al, 1991;Pekow et al, 1994). Nevertheless, a relatively long and thin needle can be more flexible, and proper guidance of the needle might be somewhat complicated.…”

“…These rarely include bile leakage with bile peritonitis, significant bleeding from the liver and acute vagal reaction with severe hypotension and bradycardia (vanSonneberg et al, 1992). However, some other authors did not find any significant complications of fine-needle puncture even studying a large number of human patients (Swobodnik et al, 1991;Tudyka et al, 1995;Puskás and Király, 2000).…”

“…In humans, neither neutrophilia nor other signs of inflammation (increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate) were reported after a diagnostic fine-needle aspirate of the gallbladder. 18 In cows, a transient and slight increase in rectal temperature was described in 20% of the animals; however, the neutrophil count was not measured.…”
