Diagnostic and Therapeutic Significance of the Oxidative Stress Parameters in Children

Show more

“…It has also been reported that the inhibition of Ang II with specific receptor blockers, but mainly with ACE inhibitors (11), results in decreased oxidative stress status. This is generally expressed by an increased activity of antioxidant enzymes like SOD or catalase and a decrease of some peroxidation products like malondialdehyde (11,21). Similar results were also observed in our experiment, where we report an increase of SOD and GPX specific activities and a decrease of MDA levels, as a result of captopril administration.…”

“…Plasma GR and GPx activities were in our study evidently related to the maturation stage of SC, thus their synergistic reduction could also be an epiphenomenon of the disease severity. Physical inactivity, for example, which often accompanies the greater visual disability, has been shown to decrease both kidney and lens GPx and GR in experimental models, as well as erythrocytes GR in healthy elderly people (29)(30)(31)(32)(33)(34). Plasma GPx and GR were in our study well correlated with correspondent lens enzymes in either stage of SC, suggesting that they may serve as lens surrogate markers.…”

“…On the other hand, higher GPX activity in the elderly subjects com pared with the younger ones may represent an adaptive response to intensified oxi dative stress like in the case of CAT. The total antioxidant enzyme capa city of erythrocytes was in the young and old subjects alike, indicating the existence of compen satory changes in antioxidant enzyme activities (29,30).…”
