Diagnostic and Therapeutic Potential of Exosomes in Cancer: The Beginning of a New Tale?

Abstract: Exosomes have emerged as one of the main players in intercellular communication. These small nano-sized particles have many roles in various physiological pathways in normal and abnormal cells. Exosomes can carry various cargos such as proteins, mRNAs, and miRNAs to recipient cells. Uptake of exosomes and their cargo can induce and/or inhibit different cellular and molecular pathways that lead to the alteration of cell behavior. Multiple lines of evidence have indicated that exosomes released from cancer cells… Show more

“…One may speculate that mechanism 1) and 2), as well as 3) and 4) are complementary in that the secretion of a particular factor may be a loss for the donor and gain for the recipient cell. As a shared consequence of these distinct mechanisms, circulating EVs contain miRNAs or proteins critical for MDR and can be analyzed for cancer diagnosis and targeted chemotherapy in personalized nanomedicine (for reviews, see (Batrakova & Kim, 2016; Bell, Kirk, Hiltbrunner, Gabrielsson, & Bultema, 2016; Fais et al, 2016; Mirzaei, Sahebkar, Jaafari, Goodarzi, & Mirzaei, 2017; A. “…These nanovesicles are involved in intercellular communication at both local and systemic levels . Exosomes are vehicles that are able to transfer nucleic acids, proteins and lipids from donor cells to recipient cells, thereby influencing the target cell metabolism . Multiple studies have assessed the effect of exosomes in neurodegenerative diseases, sepsis, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, atherosclerosis and diabetes, and taken together, suggest that exosomes may participate in the development of several inflammatory diseases .…”

“…Exosomes are described as biological membrane vesicles ranging in size from 30 to 100 nm that contain a large number of different small molecules such as tetraspanins, receptors, lipids, and RNAs (Figure ; Banikazemi et al, ; H. Mirzaei, Sahebkar, Jaafari, Goodarzi, & Mirzaei, ; Saadatpour et al, ; Saeedi Borujeni et al, ; Tavakolizadeh et al, ). Secreted by most of the cells, exosomes are involved in numerous physiological functions including growth, differentiation, development, and cell death.…”
