This study provides a standard database of morphometric evaluation of the digital bone and hoof parameters of the forefeet of clinically normal donkeys using Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) software programme, as a means to improve diagnosis and clinical decision-making regarding foot lameness in equine practice. Thirty orthopedically sound donkeys were included in this study. For each donkey forefoot, lateromedial (LM) and dorsopalmar (DP) radiographs were obtained with the foot in a vertical position. A total of 26 digital bone and hoof parameters obtained from the LM and DP radiographs were evaluated through repeated measurements of the same digitalized radiograph by three operators using DICOM software. Data of the morphometric radiographic parameters of the forefeet were statistically analyzed for the frequency distribution and calculation of the intra-assay and interassay coefficients of variation (CVs) of the reproducibility of the measured parameters. Mean ± SD of digital bone and hoof parameters were significantly different among the measurements obtained for the 26 parameters. However, intra-assay and interassay CVs for digital bone and hoof parameters measurements did not differ significantly between the three examiners. In conclusion, morphometric evaluation of the radiographic parameters of the forefeet in clinically normal donkeys, establishes a reference data base correspondingly for the donkey different to those accepted for the horse.

a b s t r a c tModern pressure plates (PP) could be an alternative to traditional force plates (FP) for quantitative equine gait analysis, thereby providing the clinician with objective data on the horse's gait while unravelling the loading of different regions of the hoof during the stance phase. The aim of this study was to determine whether a stand-alone PP allows reliable measurement of gait kinetics, compared to simultaneously recorded FP variables. Six sound Warmblood horses were walked and trotted over a combined PP and FP system for collection of a set of five valid kinetic measurements for each forelimb. A measurement was considered valid if the horse was moving in a straight line at a constant pace while gait velocity was within a preset range and the hoof fully contacted the plate surface.Significant differences between FP and PP data were seen for peak vertical force (PVF), vertical impulse (VI), time at which the PVF occurs (tPVF) and forelimb symmetry ratios (SymPVF and SymVI) (P < 0.05), but not for stance phase duration (ST). Nevertheless, mean agreement indices (AIs) of ST, tPVF and SymP-VF and SymVI were excellent (P0.92), whereas AIs of PVF and VI were moderate (P0.70). The excellent agreement between PP and FP symmetry ratios confirms that observed differences between PP and FP in symmetry ratios are small (2-7%), especially when compared to the expected decrease in symmetry associated with mild lameness (>20%). The results indicate that a stand-alone pressure plate can be used to measure absolute (ST) and relative (tPVF) temporal variables and loading symmetry ratios and offers equine veterinarians a mobile, cost-efficient and quick gait evaluation method for routine clinical use. However, the system cannot be used interchangeably with a force plate to measure absolute values of limb loading.

Morphometric measurements of the horses hoof -A review of the literature Healthy hooves with good quality horn and ideal hoof conformation form the basis for a healthy horse that can achieve high performance levels. Morphometric measurements of the hoof are used to survey normal hoof shape and to quantify deviations from it. They assist in identifying poor hoof conformation and in planning, implementing and controlling corrections as well as diagnosing hoof-related diseases such as laminitis. The accuracy and reproducibility of these measurements are influenced by the radiographic technique used and the procedure of taking the measurements themselves. The basis for taking measurements from radiographs of the horses hoof is a thorough preparation. Precise, consequently at the same anatomical landmark, placement of the markers and performing of the measurements is crucial. When interpreting the parameters it has to be kept in mind that they have unequal clinical relevance and statistical variability and that the breed and height of the animal significantly influence the measurements. The wider the range of normal values the more difficult it is to distinguish between normal and abnormal values. A comprehensive assessment of coherent measurements allows an accurate evaluation of the condition of the hoof. The aims of this review of literature are to describe standardised radiographic techniques, to evaluate the most important morphometric parameters regarding both their likely accuracy and clinical relevance and to give an overview of published reference values.
