Background: Sarcopenia, i.e., the decline of skeletal muscle tissue with age, is a key cause of functional deterioration and loss of independence in older adults, and increases the risks of fall, hospitalization, and mortality; it requires active prevention and management of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults. Existing diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia have typically been developed for European populations and may not be applicable to Asian populations. The present study aimed to identify the prevalence of sarcopenia in community-dwelling Korean older adults, and validate two simplified diagnostic algorithms based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) algorithm for identifying sarcopenia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 388 community-dwelling older adults (254 women and 134 men, with a mean age of 77.8 ± 6.26 years [range, 65‒93 years]), from a rural area in Korea. Muscle strength was measured by hand grip strength, physical performance by gait speed, and muscle mass by skeletal muscle mass index (SMI). Sarcopenia was assessed using the AWGS-recommended algorithm as well as two simplified algorithms (A and B). Algorithms A and B were validated with respect to the AWGS-recommended algorithm using the chi-square test, and the sensitivity and specificity were obtained. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia, determined using the AWGS-recommended algorithm, was 41.7% and 40.3% in men and women, respectively. The overall prevalence of sarcopenia was 39.2% by the AWGS-recommended algorithm, 37.6% by algorithm A, and 37.6% by algorithm B; 137 participants were classified as sarcopenia by all three methods (p = .223).Conclusion: We established the prevalence of sarcopenia among rural community-dwelling adults in Korea and confirmed that the simplified algorithms were suitable for identification of sarcopenia in rural community-dwelling older adults in Korea. Further studies are needed to assess whether these simplified algorithms are also applicable to older Asian adults with functional and/or cognitive impairment, as well as nursing home residents.

This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. also looked at the top cited scientific papers ever published in the three journals (Tables 10-12) and found that on average, the top 10 papers in JCSM were cited 152 times, in Nutrition 670 times, and in JNHA 406 times-which is mainly due to the fact that Nutrition has been listed in Scopus 265 since 1987 and JNHA since 1997, while JCSM started only in 2010. So far, JCSM has published 563 papers, Nutrition 6198 papers, and JNHA 2396 papers. On average, JCSM has published 56 papers/year, Nutrition 188 papers/year, and JNHA 104 papers/year, which of course are major determinants of the respective journal's impact factor. This also underscores that all three journals have different approaches towards the number of papers published per year. We are grateful and look forward to more submissions of excellent research in the field of wasting and muscle disorders and are confident to maintain high quality in the Journal.

Anthropometric Measurements and Cognitive Impairment Rather Than Nutrition Status Are Associated With Sarcopenia in Long‐Term Care Residents

Background Sarcopenia is an important health problem in older adults. The aim was to study the association of anthropometric measurements, functional capacity, cognitive impairment, and nutrition status with sarcopenia in institutionalized older adults. Methods A cross‐sectional study was undertaken, determining the calf circumference (CC), mid‐upper arm muscle circumference (MUAMC), and body mass index (BMI) and administering the Pfeiffer test and Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA‐SF). Sarcopenia was diagnosed following criteria of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. After bivariate analyses, a multivariate logistic regression model was constructed to determine the association of study variables with sarcopenia. Results The study group comprised 249 residents (mean age 84.9 ± 6.7 years). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 63%. The multivariate analysis with adjusted odds ratios (ORs) indicated that the risk of sarcopenia was significantly increased by being female (OR = 2.8; 95% CI 1.3–6.2), having moderate or severe cognitive impairment (Pfeiffer test score of 5–10) (OR = 2.4; 95% CI 0.9–6.4), and having a BMI < 22 kg/m2 (OR = 22.4; 95% CI 6.7–75.0). Moreover, a low CC (OR = 6.5; 95% CI 3.0–14.0) or MUAMC (OR = 3.9; 95% CI 1.7–9.3) also significantly increased the risk of sarcopenia. A negative association was observed between sarcopenia and MNA‐SF, although it did not remain statistically significant in the multivariate analysis. Conclusions The variables identified as risk factors for sarcopenia can assist in detecting individuals at higher risk who require special clinical attention.
