Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer and Pre-Cancerous Lesions by Artificial Intelligence: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Objective: The likelihood of timely treatment for cervical cancer increases with timely detection of abnormal cervical cells. Automated methods of detecting abnormal cervical cells were established because manual identification requires skilled pathologists and is time consuming and prone to error. The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for the prediction, screening, and diagnosis of cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions.… Show more

“…Effective prevention strategies for cervical cancer include the use of screening tests for primary and secondary prevention, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, and early detection and treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (10) Artificial Intelligence interpretation of cervical smears or images could serve as an aid when combined with human evaluation. Further studies on prediction and detection are needed for making appropriate decisions about the treatment of cervical cancer (11). The incidence of bone metastasis varies from 1.1-8.2% (12)(13).…”

“…Currently, artificial intelligence (AI) can be applied for the prediction, screening, detection of cervical cancer or precancerous lesion and predicting the prognosis of patients [ 44 , 45 ]. In addition, AI has the potential to distinguish surgeon experience and to provide access to standard surgical solutions that are independent of individuals’ experience and day-to-day performance changes.…”

“…[23][24][25][26] In 2020, there were 342,000 cervical cancer deaths; approximately 90% of these deaths occurred in low-and middle-income countries. 26 Programs that enable girls to receive vaccines against HPV infection and women to receive frequent screenings and appropriate care are in place in high-income nations. Screening makes it possible to find precancerous lesions at an early stage when they are still treatable.…”
