In this study, the effect of two Gram-positive bacteria, Lactococcus lactis and Bacillus sp., on the survival rate of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) eggs until larval stage. And also, effects of bacteria on some water quality criteria and blue sac fry syndrome on alevin stage of fish was investigated during this period. The bacteria contaminated on healthy trout eyed eggs during the incubation period by the immersion method. Two bacterial groups and the control group were designed in duplicate. At the end of the study (fry stage), the survival rates of the eggs were recorded. It was also investigated whether the bacteria reduced the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate content of the water and prevented the blue sac syndrome caused by Aeromonas hydrophila. The highest survival rate was observed in trout inoculated with Bacillus sp. (92.5%), followed by L. lactis (70%), and control (45%), respectively. The highest death rates were observed during the alevin stage in all groups. In this study, it was observed that both species of bacteria contributed to the survival rate of the trout eggs during the incubation period. It was determined that both species of bacteria reduced the amount of nitrite in the water. Furthermore, with this study, Bacillus sp. was observed to suppress the effects of blue sac fry syndrome caused by A. hydrophila.

Since 2014, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) displaying clinical signs of red skin disease (RSD), including haemorrhagic and ulcerative skin lesions, have been repeatedly observed in Swedish rivers. Although the disease has since been reported in other countries, including Norway, Denmark, Ireland and the UK, no pathogen has so far been conclusively associated with RSD. In this study, the presence of 17 fish pathogens was investigated through qPCR in 18 returning Atlantic salmon with clinical signs of the disease in rivers in Sweden and Norway between 2019 and 2021. Several potential pathogens were repeatedly detected, including a protozoan (Ichthyobodo spp.), an oomycete (Saprolegnia spp.) and several bacteria (Yersinia ruckeri, Candidatus Branchiomonas cysticola, Aeromonas spp.). Cultivation on different media from ulcers and internal organs revealed high concentrations of rod‐shaped bacteria typical of Aeromonadaceae. Multilocus phylogenetic analysis of different clones and single gene phylogenies of sequences obtained from the fish revealed concurrent isolation of several bacterial strains belonging to the species A. bestiarum, A. piscicola and A. sobria. While these bacterial infections may be secondary, these findings are significant for future studies on RSD and should guide the investigation of future outbreaks. However, the involvement of Aeromonas spp. as putative primary etiological agents of the disease cannot be ruled out and needs to be assessed by challenge experiments.

Fish diseases have a significant negative influence on the Malaysian aquaculture industry. Since the 1980s, the sector has grown in size, which has resulted in a rise in the prevalence of infectious outbreaks affecting both freshwater and marine cultured fish species. Demand for commercially available fish vaccinations is predicted to increase as infectious disease outbreaks continue to occur. In Malaysia, aquaculture vaccine research and development (R&D) are still in its infancy, with most efforts concentrating on producing vaccines against bacterial infections, most notably streptococcosis, vibriosis, and motile Aeromonas septicemia. Despite several attempts, no homegrown vaccine has been effectively introduced into the manufacturing pipeline to date. At the moment, only three imported aquatic vaccines have received full permission, a far cry from the 314 and 60 vaccines licensed in the poultry and porcine industries, respectively. This review will describe recent findings regarding the development of aquaculture vaccines for certain fish species and diseases in Malaysia. In our opinion, R&D on fish vaccines is critical to the aquaculture industry's viability.
