Diagnosis of Aeromonas sobria and Saprolegnia sp. co-infection in rainbow trout fry (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine a considerable level of mortalities occurred in rainbow trout fry (Oncorhynchus mykiss) cultured in a research hatchery located in Marmara Region/Turkey. Totally 18 individuals (1-8 g) were investigated by using bacteriological and mycological methods. The affected fish showed skin darkening, prolapses and fungal mats at the base of the fins. According to morphological and biochemical characteristics of the isolates, all of them were identified as Aeromonas sobria. Saprole… Show more

“…Egg deaths in freshwater hatchery systems are reported because of fungal infestations (Thoen et al, 2011). However, some studies show that bacteria in trout hatchery systems can also cause the deaths of fish (Declercq et al, 2013;Yardımcı and Turgay, 2021). Bacterial contamination studies generally have been conducted on trout eggs to determine the negative effects of various bacteria.…”

“…However, it's worth noting that Ichthyobodo spp. are opportunistic parasites that tends to thrive in hosts that have weakened immune systems due to stressors or other infections such as SAV or Aeromonas sobria (Repstad, 2011; Yardimci & Turgay, 2021). Saprolegnia spp.…”

“…Saprolegnia spp. have already been isolated in association with A. sobria during an outbreak in rainbow trout fry ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ) (Yardimci & Turgay, 2021). However, the recurring presence of Ichthyobodo spp.…”

“…Infection with aeromonad bacteria causes MAS, which is most usually associated with A. hydrophila [71,72], but other species such as A. sobria [71,73], A. veronii [74,75], and A. caviae [76] have been documented to have a similar etiology in the past. The Aeromonas genus consists of many species.…”
