Diagnosis and Treatment of Urothelial Tumors by Ureteropyeloscopy

Abstract: Ureteropyeloscopy not only is of considerable diagnostic value but also is therapeutic-ally useful. In particular, it is superior to all other procedures available for clarifying the nature of filling defects found at urography. When a ureteral tumor has been discovered, biopsy material can be obtained to determine whether the tumor is malignant before treatment is initiated. In suitable cases, endoscopie endoureteral electroresection can be performed as an alternative to open surgery. CASE HISTORIESCase 1 A 3… Show more

“…Since then, endoscopic diagnosis and treatment have been performed increasingly in many patients with upper tract lesions. 8,9,16,19,22,23 In our 15 patients, renal pelvic carcinoma was diagnosed in four patients (26.7%), one of 11 patients with hematuria (9.1%) and three of four patients with hematuria and a filling defect (75.0%). Reported frequencies of upper tract TCC diagnosed by ureteropyeloscopy are 0-68.4% in patients with hematuria, 8,13,19,20 12.5-66.7% in patients with a filling defect on urography 8,13,15,18,20 and 66.7% in patients with hematuria and a filling defect on urography.…”

“…The most important disease of the upper tract that should be diagnosed accurately is urothelial carcinoma of the renal pelvis and ureter. Diagnosis of upper tract urothelial carcinoma is sometimes elusive with standard diagnostic methods 18 , 23 , 24 . In such cases, a diagnosis of urothelial carcinoma of the upper tract is challenging.…”
