The injector is one of the main components of a diesel engine fuel system. A typical fuel injector has two basic parts: the nozzle and the injector body. If either of these components is clogged or damaged, it will compromise the entire performance of the engine. Any injector problem can easily be fixed by cleaning, reconditioning, or replacement. If the engine is producing low power, replacing the injector nozzle with a new injector nozzle is necessary, so that engine performance reaches standard performance. However, replacing a new injector nozzle carries a huge maintenance cost. In this research, reconditioning or repairing the used injector nozzle to increase the fuel injection pressure in the engine is one solution that can be done to improve engine performance with low maintenance costs. The testing results found that brake power and brake thermal efficiency increase as fuel injection pressure increases, but specific fuel consumption decreases. For both the used injector and repaired injector, the minimum specific fuel consumption (SFC) does occur at the maximum brake power (BP) not generated. This means that the diesel engine never occurs in a condition of maximum power generated with minimum specific fuel consumption or vice versa.

The paper presents the methodology of testing common rail fuel injectors, which consisted in extending the standard diagnostic proce-dures with the analysis of the resulting fuel delivery fields. The calculations were carried out in a popular spreadsheet, using Gauss's formulas (the so-called shoelace formula). In this way, the necessity to modify the test bench software was eliminated, as the analytical process took place after the end of the active experiment phase. It has been shown that the proposed solution should be particularly useful in problematic situations where clear-cut verification and assessment of the technical condition of the fuel injectors is sometimes difficult, as shown in the example. In addition, implementation in a digital environment allows the presented algorithms to be reused in research with a similar profile.

Simplified methodology for testing common rail piezoelectric injectors taking into account reference characteristics

The article presents the methodology of testing Continental/Siemens VDO piezoelectric injectors. To determine the correctness of their operation, the reference characteristics were used, which, due to the lack of guidelines from the manufacturer, constituted the only reference base for the obtained expenses and the intensity of fuel overflows. Simultaneously, the phase of the active experiment was simplified by limiting the number of measuring points, and then estimating the missing data using the Aitken iterative technique. Automation of the calculation process was obtained thanks to the proprietary numerical algorithm, whose formulas were introduced into a standard spreadsheet.
