Aim: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic predictive values of a light induced fluorescence intra oral camera (VistaCam iX) versus visual assessment method (ICDAS-II) in identification of occlusal carious lesion. Methodology: Occlusal surfaces of 199 molar teeth from 43 adult patients who fulfill the eligibility criteria were examined by two observers using two diagnostic methods. The teeth were firstly assessed visually according to the criteria of the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS-II) then by fluorescence camera. Inter observer agreement was measured for ICDAS-II using Kappa and weighted Kappa Values and for the camera using inter class correlation (ICC). Correlation between methods was calculated using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (r s) and the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC curve) between the tested methods was estimated. Results: Significant positive correlation was found between the ICDAS-II and the camera measurements (r s = 0.8739, P< 0.001). The area under the ROC curve was (0.932, p< 0.001) indicating a great association between the two tested methods when selecting adequate cutoff values for the camera. There was a statistically significant agreement between the two observers for ICDAS-II values (Kappa =0.8125, weighted Kappa = 0.8558). Excellent inter examiner agreement was found between the two observers when using the FC, ICC = 0.9774 (95% CI, 0.789 to 0.889), (p<0.001). Conclusion: The camera showed high reliability and agreement with ICDAS-II for initial occlusal caries detection. Sensitivity and specificity values for the camera varied depending on the cutoff value.

A number of criteria for the assessment of biological sex, which are applied to living or recently deceased individuals, have been developed, such as genetic, chromosomal, gonadal, hormonal, and phenotypic criteria. Features of a metric and descriptive nature are used to assess the sex of skeletal materials. The diagnostic features of the skull are concentrated in the craniofacial region and around the eye sockets. The mandible is a diagnostically important part of the skull, on which a complex of features is visible. These features develop up to the third decade of life. The goal of the research was to assess the suitability of the parameters of the preangular notch, in other words, the length, height, and surface area for sex prediction applied to skeletal materials. The study included computed tomography images of the masticatory system of 194 patients, consisting of 83 females and 111 males, aged from 16 to 93 years. The three straight lines which correspond to the sides of the triangle representing the notch, in addition to its height, were determined and measured digitally. The receiver operating characteristic method was used to assess the usefulness of the studied features for the purposes of sex prediction. The sensitivity of the test ranged from 51.4% to 67% for the parameters of the preangular notch on the right‐hand side, and from 44.4% to 80.2% on the left‐hand side. The most reliable predictive models were obtained for two features (shown in the graphical abstract). However, when taking into account, the specificity and sensitivity of the tests presented here, only the length of side AB (a basal length of the notch) can be regarded as a feature that supports the assessment of sex on the basis of other diagnostic features of the mandible. The size and shape of the preangular notch should be treated as auxiliary features in the assessment of sex. For this reason, it is recommended that they should be applied simultaneously to the set of features described in the section on anthropological standards.

A cárie dentária é uma das doenças crônicas mais prevalente nas pessoas em todo o mundo, os indivíduos estão suscetíveis a está doença em todas as fases da vida. O objetivo deste trabalho foi revisar na literatura quais são as ferramentas disponíveis para o diagnóstico e detecção da cárie e suas lesões. Foi realizado uma coleta de dados no PubMed, no período de janeiro de 2019 e junho de 2020, com as palavras chave: “dental caries” AND “diagnostic” AND “ICDAS”, sem restrição de idioma ou pais de publicação. Foram encontrados diversos métodos de detecção, como: ICDAS (International Caries Detection and Assessment System), Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment – CAST), DIAGNOdent® - LF; DIAGNOdent pen, CarieScan PRO (CP),VistaCam, DMF (Decayed–Missing–Filled - DMF) e outros. A utilização do ICDAS nas recomendações de tratamento para lesões de cárie variou entre os examinadores. O uso de um explorador na avaliação de lesões de cárie aumentou a validade e a confiabilidade da decisão sobre cavitação superficial. A tomada de decisão sobre o tratamento pode ser influenciada pelo sistema de detecção e classificação da lesão de cárie. A pesquisa apontou que existem variações entre os estudos e a utilização do sistema ICDAS para cárie. O sistema ideal de detecção de cárie deve permitir o diagnóstico precoce da cárie em estágio inicial e melhorar a tomada de decisão em relação a um plano de tratamento adequado.
