The wax present in petroleum sludge, generated by the refinery and at the crude production sites, consists of paraffin hydrocarbons (C18 -C36) known as paraffin wax and naphthenic hydrocarbons (C30 -C60). The present study is aimed at the recovery of wax from the petroleum oily sludge by microwave assisted solvent extraction using Toluene/MEK mixture and subsequently de-crystallizing the wax. The process variables affecting the microwave assisted solvent extraction is optimized for recovery of wax. The simultaneous effects of process variables such as irradiation time (2 -10 minutes), solvent to sludge ratio (40 -80wt %), reactant volume (100-300ml) and microwave power (80-400W) on the recovery of wax were evaluated. A central composite design and response surface methodology were used for the optimization of the extraction process. Based on the central composite design, quadratic models were developed to correlate the extraction process variables with the responses and the models were analysed using appropriate statistical methods for analysis of variance. Optimization of process variables shows the maximum recovery of wax was about 79.57 % at 300 ml of reactant volume with microwave power output of 400 W at 7.6 minutes of retention time with 56.56 % of Toluene/MEK to sludge ratio.

This chapter includes information on the composition of soybeans, soybean oil, and other soybean lipids, especially as affected by environment, variety, and genetic modification. Other topics discussed are the physical properties of soybean oil, grading of soybeans, oil extraction, and the effect of various extraction techniques on oil quality and the various soy protein ingredients. Basic refining and processing of soybean oil includes degumming, neutralization, bleaching, hydrogenation, and deodorization, but alternative refining methods are also discussed along with soybean refinery coproducts (lecithin, deodorizer distillate, and soapstock). The major uses of soybean oil are itemized and trading rules for crude and refined soybean oil are provided. The major food products produced from soybean oil are cooking and salad oils, frying fats, mayonnaise, margarine, shortening, confectionary and imitation dairy products, and “low‐calorie fat substitutes.” The oxidative quality of soybean oil is reviewed, including flavor reversion, factors affecting oil oxidation, measures of control and measures of finished oil quality, storage and handling, and special processing for off‐quality soybean oil. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the health aspects of soybean oil, including the health effects of cholesterol, unsaturated oils, trans ‐isomers, and total fat intake.

Soybeans are one of the most important crops in terms of volume and applications of the products obtained from them. Grown for oil and protein production, soybeans are feedstock for food, feed, fuel, and biobased products. Today, soybean oil can be found in most food products, as a result of its availability and positive nutritional and functional properties. The extensive scientific research and development conducted by both industry and academia on soybean oil is a main contributor to its important positioning among oils. This article provides a comprehensive review of this work, including information on the composition of soybeans, soybean oil, and other soybean lipids, especially as affected by environment, variety, and genetic modification; the physical properties of soybean oil, grading of soybeans, oil extraction, and the effect of various extraction techniques on oil quality and the various soy protein ingredients; basic refining and processing of soybean oil and soybean refinery co‐products; the major uses of soybean oil; trading rules for soybean oil; and the oxidative quality of soybean oil along with its health aspects.
