Developments in Health Communication in the 21st Century

Abstract: In this article, five papers that formed the Special Issue for the fourth IALSP Taskforce on health communication are revisited. Our starting point is Gallois' epilogue and the six themes she identified from those papers. These themes are invoked to explore where health communication is moving in the 21 st century. Burgeoning work on intergroup communication in this context, patient voice, minority groups and the role of the carer are highlighted.

“…Hollen et al [48] concluded that the LCSS demonstrates (1) good feasibility, reliability and content validity and (2) high interrater reliability. Overall, the LCSS has consistently demonstrated good feasibility, reliability (internal consistency) and convergent validity [48,49,50,51]. For this study, Cronbach's α for the total scale was 0.94.…”

“…18 16,19 CAT has been applied to research conducted to study communication taking place between healthcare providers and patients 17,18,20-23 24-28 and between healthcare professional groups. 26,29,30 To date, there appears to be no published studies using CAT as a theoretical framework to study communication exchanges between hospital pharmacists and patients. However, CAT would be an appropriate choice as it allows for interpretation of the detailed patterns and flow of pharmacist-patient conversations and would help identify occasions of accommodative or non-accommodative approaches in their communication with patients.…”

“…174 Yet, much of the healthcare communication research published to date has been conducted without the use of theories or is a-theoretical relying instead on anecdotal reports. 174,175 The rationale for using theory in healthcare communication research has been "…to understand, explain and predict health beliefs, attitudes, intentions, and behaviours of individuals, dyads, groups, and mass audiences." 176 (p 261) Bylund also recognised the limitations of applying interpersonal theories that were originally used in social settings to the provider-patient setting in healthcare.…”

“…CAT has been applied to various research conducted in social science, [216][217][218][219][220] business, 221-223 law 224 225,226 as well as to study communication that takes place between healthcare providers and patients 175,[227][228][229][230][231][232][233][234][235][236][237] and between healthcare professional groups. 175,209,237 CAT proposes that speakers in an exchange make adjustments (consciously and unconsciously) to the way they communicate with each other based on each speaker's individual goals for that communication interaction as well as their desire to develop and maintain their personal, social or professional identity. 238 An interaction between speakers may shift from each individual's social or personal identity depending on which identity is most salient at a given time.…”
