Developmental dyspraxia and developmental coordination disorder

Abstract: This article discusses the role developmental dyspraxia plays in developmental coordination disorder (DCD), based upon a review of literature on apraxia, developmental dyspraxia, and DCD. Apraxia and dyspraxia have often been equated with DCD. However, it is argued that apraxia and dyspraxia primarily refer to the problems of motor sequencing and selection, which not all children with DCD exhibit. The author proposes to distinguish developmental dyspraxia from DCD. Other issues discussed include the assessment… Show more

“…These percentages are dependent of the type of motor assessment, referral sources and the cut-off points used (Gillberg 1998;Kadesjo and Gillberg 1998;Geuze et al 2001;Wilson 2005). Motor coordination problems have previously been labelled ''Clumsy Child Syndrome'', ''Non-cerebral-palsy motor-perception dysfunction'', ''Minor Neurological Dysfunction'' or ''Dyspraxia of childhood'' (Miyahara and Mobs 1995;Hadders-Algra 2002;Magalhaes et al 2006). Since 1994 the use of the term Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) predominates in the literature.…”

“…En este artículo se utilizará de forma predominante la expresión "problemas evolutivos de coordinación motriz", con su acrónimo PECM, aunque sabemos que en medios terapéuticos se emplea también la expresión "trastornos evolutivos de la habilidad motriz" o "dispraxia evolutiva" 17 . Un análisis de los diferentes estudios realizados sobre este sector de la población escolar manifiesta que globalmente poseen un conjunto de peculiaridades:…”

“…Different disorders are characterized by motor coordination problems including autism (David, Baranek, Wiesen, Miao, & Thorpe, 2012;Fournier, Hass, Naik, Lodha, & Cauraugh, 2010;Green et al, 2009;Provost, Lopez, & Heimerl, 2007;Staples & Reid, 2010), dyspraxia (Miyahara & Möbs, 1995;Pless & Carlsson, 2000), and hyperactivity (Barkley, DuPau, & McMurray, 1990;Leung & Connolly, 2008;Pitcher, Piek, & Hay, 2007;Steger et al, 2001). Motor problems appear more prevalent when using gross motor coordination skills that rely on postural control and mobility (Fournier et al, 2010).…”
