Development of vibration damping materials based on butyl rubber: A study of the phase equilibrium, rheological, and dynamic properties of compositions

Abstract: A detailed study of butyl rubber‐based vibration damping formulations linking their composition, morphology, phase structure, viscosity, mechanical loss factor, and other characteristics is presented for the first time. High performance of the compositions including aromatic petroleum oil is explained by limited solubility of the plasticizer that leads to the formation of a highly‐viscous emulsion (η20°C ≈ 1000 Pa·s) consisting of a swollen butyl rubber matrix and dispersed oil droplets in the broad compositio… Show more

“…Popular sound deadening and vibration damping plates (VDP) and tapes for the automotive industry are usually made of bitumen or butyl rubber-based adhesives [ 127 ]. A traditional VDP consists of a sandwich-like structure, where a viscoelastic rubber layer is placed between two steel plates, effectively absorbing vibrational energy [ 128 , 129 ]. Lately, aluminum has replaced steel as a means to decrease the weight and expense of VDPs [ 130 , 131 ].…”

“…Исследованию ПИБ в различных композиционных материалах посвящено множество работ. Так, в [27][28][29] рассмотрено влияние ПИБ на демпфирующие характеристики композитов на основе бутилкаучука БК-1675Н. Показано, что введение ПИБ приводит к значительному улучшению демпфирующих свойств (повышению тангенса угла механических потерь) композитов, содержащих бутилкаучук.…”

“…Thus, damping materials that can transform mechanical vibration energy into heat energy and dissipate it must be developed [ 5 , 6 ]. Rubber is the most widely used polymer-damping material owing to its viscoelastic properties [ 7 , 8 ]. However, the raw materials used to produce synthetic rubber are derived from fossil fuels [ 9 ].…”
