This paper brings together several contemporary topics in energy systems aiming to provide a literature review based reflection on how several interrelated energy systems can contribute together to a more sustainable world. Some directions are discussed, such as the improvement of the energy efficiency and environmental performance of the systems, the development of new technologies, the increase of the use of renewable energy sources, the promotion of holistic and multidisciplinary studies, and the implementation of new management rules and "eco-friendly and sustainable" oriented policies at different scales. The interrelations of the diverse energy systems are also discussed in order to address their main social-economic-environmental impacts. The subjects covered include the assessment of the electricity market and its main players (demand, supply, distribution), the evaluation of some urban systems (buildings, transportation, commuting), the analysis of the implementation of renewable energy cooperatives, the discussion of the diffusion of the electric vehicle and the importance of new bioenergy systems. This paper also presents relevant research carried out in the framework of both the Energy for Sustainability Initiative of the University of Coimbra and the Sustainable Energy Systems focus area of the MIT-Portugal Program. To conclude, several research topics that should be addressed in the near future are proposed.

Nowadays, most illumination sources for streetlights use high intensity discharge (HID) lamps. Global concerns have been raised regarding the amount of atmospheric CO 2 released due to the power consumption of HID lamps. Thus streetlights with LED and solar-energy were analyzed competitively, to evaluate the feasibility of streetlights based on environmentally-friendly products at K University. The results showed that the adoption of a LED based streetlight system and a solar-energy LED system could potentially reduce CO 2 emissions by approximately 120 and 170 tons each year, respectively. While the initial investment cost of LED is higher than HID, the maintenance cost is approximately one quarter of the maintenance cost of HID. However solar-energy LED lights are not appropriate to replace campus lights because of the significantly higher cost. Since the invention of LED, the technology has been continually improving while the prices are quickly decreasing; therefore, the break-even point of investments in environmentally-friendly lights is expected to be reached much earlier than previously anticipated.

A study on the reliability and performance of solar powered street lighting systems

This paper presents the results of a study on the reliability and performance of the solar-powered street lighting systems installed at the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Nigeria, a hot and humid environment. The technical performance of the systems was studied using the following performance indicators: system energy yield, capture loss, as well as the system performance ratio while the reliability of the systems was examined using a model developed from the findings from the maintenance and fault diagnosis of the systems. The model was used to predict the total failure and survival probability of the systems using the Weibull distribution. The performance evaluation during the monitored period (February 2012 to January 2015) indicated that the performance ratios of the systems vary from 70% to 89% and the energy yields of the systems ranging from 2.87 h/day to 5.57 h/day. The results from the reliability analysis also showed that when the stress concentration factor around the notch between the cable terminals in the charge controller increases, the charge controller will become overheated, which in turn affected other components of the systems. The implications of this study are also discussed for the design and development of future solar-powered street lighting systems.
