Development of Slurry Surfacing with Electric Arc Furnace Slag for Pavements with Friction Problems

Abstract: Pavement maintenance is an essential activity for maintaining the quality of the pavements. It is common for the ageing pavement to present problems of friction, so a proper solution must be provided. In this work, electric arc furnace slags are incorporated in slurry surfacing to provide adequate friction with this technique. The electric arc furnace slag was studied with physical, chemical, and mechanical tests to evaluate its suitability in the formation of the bituminous mixture. At the same time, differen… Show more

“…For Slurry Surfacing road pavements the optimum for usage still remain bitumen emulsions produced on distilled high-acidic bitumen obtained from heavy high-resinous low-paraffinic crude oil (Saghafi, 2019;Dong, 2018;Son, 2014;Apaza, 2021;Grilli, 2019;Terrones-Saeta, 2020;Johannes, 2014;Destree, 2022;Usman, 2019;Johannes, 2019;Izadi, 2020;Pyshyev, 2015). Still, such bitumens are highcost and not always available for usage due to deficiency on the market.…”

“…The electric arc furnace slags have been used as an aggregate for hot mix asphalt [20,21], warm mix asphalt [22] and even for mixes with bituminous emulsion [23]; this shows its excellent mechanical characteristics and its use in developing high quality bituminous mixtures [24]. However, in most cases the characteristics of this by-product have not been maximized and its use has been relegated to low-level materials [25].…”

“…Research into the improvement of production processes is mainly based on the use of new techniques to reduce the temperature at which bituminous mixes are formed, as these are the main element in the production of high-quality, comfortable, and safe roads [18]. Temperature reduction techniques are mainly based on the use of bitumen emulsions [19], as the mixes are formed with this binder at ambient temperature, thus avoiding the heating of the bituminous mix at high temperatures by fossil fuels [20]. At the same time, and with the aim of reducing the extraction of raw materials, waste has been reused for the formation of bituminous mixtures.…”
