Development of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) diagnostics and impact on prognosis

Abstract: Objective• To evaluate imaging methods and prognoses between small renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) and larger tumours according to the era of diagnostics. Patients and Methods• In all, 784 consecutive patients diagnosed with RCC between 1964 and 1997 at the Pirkanmaa Hospital District in Finland were included. • Patients were divided into two groups: tumours of ≤3.0 and >3.0 cm in diameter.• Prognosis was analysed according to the era of diagnostics:(i) pre-computed tomography (CT) and pre-ultrasound (US), (ii) U… Show more

“…Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) is a cancer of the renal parenchyma and the most common type of adult kidney cancer, making up 90% of renal malignancies . The incidence of RCC is increasing over recent decades, which may be related to the advanced diagnostic techniques for early detection of small renal masses and increased rates of risk factors such as obesity and hypertension . Disease stage is currently the most important factor that correlates with disease survival.…”

“…At present, the immunotherapy for RCC is mainly based on immune checkpoints of PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors [27][28][29]. However, the immunotherapy of chRCC is still insufficient.…”

“…RCC patients often have advanced disease by the time when observed due to the body is remarkably good at hiding the symptoms. Thus, improving the sensitivity of early diagnosis of tumors is helpful for reducing clinical adverse events [29]. Here, we developed a method by combined examination of gene expression levels and eQTM methylation levels to improve the performance of early diagnosis.…”
