Riau is an Indonesian province known for its large plantations. The plantation business makes the most significant contribution to the fiscal revenues of the province. This paper aims to innovate rural economy through the sustainable development of superior commodities in the plantation sub-sector of agriculture. Specifically, multi-criteria analysis (MCA) was performed to determine the superior commodities in each locality. The results show that the superior commodities include palm oil, rubber, coconut, cocoa, coffee, and sago. The development of these commodities could boost farmers’ income with the added value of planation products. On this basis, the fair use of land for all categories was highlighted from social, economic, and environmental perspectives, and recognized as essential to the development of sustainable plantations, which are integral to rural economy and land sustainability. The proposed development strategy for superior commodities in plantation is in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Riau Province, Indonesia.

This study aims to determine the factors that can affect the percentage of poverty in the province of Riau Indonesia. This study using variables that are considered to affect the Poverty Percentage, namely; Human Development Index and Net Participation Rate. This study has 3 interrelated variables, including the human development index and the net participation rate which have an effect of 83.6% on the poverty level in Riau Province while the remaining 16.4% is influenced by other variables. From the data above, it can be explained that the Pearson Human Development Index (APM) to the Net Participation Rate (NER) of 0.161 is positive, there is no correlation. Human Development Index to Poverty Percentage -0.660 strong correlation although the form of the relationship is negative. This study uses secondary data from the Central Bureau of Statistics of Riau Province by looking at 12 districts in Riau Province. This study uses quantitative research where the data analysis technique uses SPSS software. Hopefully, in the future, there will be research that looks at other factors that cause poverty levels in the Riau province of Indonesia.

Comparing Mining and Palm Oil Plantation Impacts on the Human Security of Local Communities

Coal mining and palm oil plantations are important sectors for supporting development in Indonesia. However, these sectors are criticized as the cause of horizontal conflicts, deforestation, and natural disasters that threaten the human security of local communities. This paper aims to compare the extent to which coal mining industries and palm oil plantations have impacted the human security of local communities. For this purpose, this study applies comparative process tracing in the case of Kalimantan Timur and Kalimantan Tengah. This research found that palm oil plantations have lower negative impacts on the human security of local communities than coal mining industries. Mining has co-opted the livelihood of local communities. Local communities, most of whom initially work as farmers, lose job opportunities due to the transfer of agriculture to mining, which does not fit with the agency of local communities. In contrast, palm oil plantations establish cooperation with local laborers and local farmers in the Nucleus Estate Smallholder scheme (NES) which prevents unemployment. Therefore, in the context of local communities’ human security, it is better for government to develop palm oil plantations than coal mining.
