Development of Oral Delivery Systems with Enhanced Antioxidant and Anticancer Activity: Coix Seed Oil and β-Carotene Coloaded Liposomes

Abstract: Fortifying food and beverage products with combinations of bioactive agents is a major initiative within the food industry because of their potentially additive or even synergistic benefits for human health. Coix seed oil (CSO) has been reported to possess anticancer activity, whereas β-carotene (βC) is a natural antioxidant that may also exhibit anticancer activity. However, both of these bioactives are insoluble in water and have poor oral bioavailability. The aim of this study was to overcome these obstacle… Show more

“…Carotenoids (including beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, and hundreds of related compounds) act as antioxidants and may reduce the risks of cancer and other diseases. The food sources of carotenoids are highly pigmented fruits and vegetables (apricot, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, pumpkin, spinach, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes) [168]. 4.…”

“…As they have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains inside, they can be used to encapsulate both polar and nonpolar bioactive compounds (Ajeeshkumar et al., 2021). A variety of methods can be used to fabricate these systems, including homogenization sonication, lipid film hydration, solvent dispersion, membrane extrusion, supercritical fluid, and detergent removal methods (Amoabediny et al., 2018; Bai et al., 2018; Bozzuto & Molinari, 2015; Daeihamed et al., 2017; Z. “…There are also research works focused on improving the oral stability of carotenoids. Studies conducted by Jhan et al [170] presented the method for efficient encapsulation of lycopene in double-loaded liposomes consisting lycopene β-cyclodextrin complex, cholesterol and soy lecithin, whereas simple liposomes were found to be effective nanocarriers for β-carotene [171].…”
