Background-The risks and benefits of long-term dual antiplatelet therapy remain unclear.
Methods and Results-This prospective, multicenter, open-label, randomized comparison trial was conducted in 24 clinicalcenters in Korea. Menopause is clinically diagnosed as a condition when a woman has not menstruated for one year. During the menopausal transition period, there is an emergence of various lipid metabolic disorders due to hormonal changes, such as decreased levels of estrogens and increased levels of circulating androgens; these may lead to the development of metabolic syndromes including cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Dysregulation of lipid metabolism affects the body fat mass, fat-free mass, fatty acid metabolism, and various aspects of energy metabolism, such as basal metabolic ratio, adiposity, and obesity. Moreover, menopause is also associated with alterations in the levels of various lipids circulating in the blood, such as lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and triacylglycerol (TG). Alterations in lipid metabolism and excessive adipose tissue play a key role in the synthesis of excess fatty acids, adipocytokines, proinflammatory cytokines, and reactive oxygen species, which cause lipid peroxidation and result in the development of insulin resistance, abdominal adiposity, and dyslipidemia. This review discusses dietary recommendations and beneficial compounds, such as vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, phytochemicals—and their food sources—to aid the management of abnormal lipid metabolism in postmenopausal women.
Ginseng has an anti-cancer effect in several cancer models. This study was to characterize active constituents of ginseng and their effects on proliferation of prostate cancer cell lines, LNCaP and PC3. Cell proliferation was measured by [3H]thymidine incorporation, the intracellular calcium concentration by a dual-wavelength spectrophotometer system, effects on mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases by Western blotting, and cell attachment and morphologic changes were observed under a microscope. Among 11 ginsenosides tested, ginsenosides Rg3 and Rh2 inhibited the proliferation of prostate cancer cells. EC50s of Rg3 and Rh2 on PC3 cells were 8.4 microM and 5.5 microM, respectively, and 14.1 microM and 4.4 microM on LNCaP cells, respectively. Both ginsenosides induced cell detachment and modulated three modules of MAP kinases activities differently in LNCaP and PC3 cells. These results suggest that ginsenosides Rg3 and Rh2-induced cell detachment and inhibition of the proliferation of prostate cancer cells may be associated with modulation of three modules of MAP kinases.
Purpose -This study aims to investigate the conceptual structure of fast fashion avoidance among young consumers in Korea. The effects of negative beliefs on the behavioural intention regarding fast fashion avoidance are empirically examined. Design/methodology/approach -A conceptual model of fast fashion avoidance is proposed and tested based on the literature and blog analyses. Web-based online survey data are analyzed by second-order factor analysis and hierarchical regression. Findings -The second-order structure of eight negative beliefs is statistically supported. Among these negative beliefs, poor performance and deindividuation have positive effects on fast fashion avoidance. While inauthenticity has a negative effect, big store discomfort and foreignness have an interaction effect with regards to the lack of alternatives.Research limitations/implications -The results are based on convenient sampling of young female adults. However, it is tested in Korea, of which global fast fashion retailing is in its growing stage. Originality/value -This study represents a new attempt to apply the concept of brand avoidance to an explanation of fast fashion avoidance, and test it using empirically-collected survey data.
Absence of continuous flow communication can explain a more favorable clinical course of AIH than for AD, and medical treatment with frequent imaging follow-up and timed elective surgery in cases with complications can be a rational option for patients with proximal AIH.
Objective. To investigate the direct effects of placenta growth factor (PlGF) and its specific receptor, flt-1, which are known to mediate angiogenesis, on the inflammatory process of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Methods. Expression of PlGF and flt-1 in the synovial tissue of RA patients was examined using immunohistochemistry. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine the concentrations of PlGF, tumor necrosis factor ␣ (TNF␣), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in culture supernatants of either mononuclear cells or synoviocytes. The flt-1 expression level in mononuclear cells was analyzed by flow cytometry. Experimental arthritis was induced in mice either by immunization with type II collagen (CII) or by injection of anti-CII antibody.Results. PlGF was highly expressed in the synovium of RA patients, and its primary source was fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS). When stimulated with IL-1, FLS from RA patients produced higher amounts of PlGF than did FLS from patients with osteoarthritis. Exogenous PlGF specifically increased the production of TNF␣ and IL-6 in mononuclear cells from RA patients (but not those from healthy controls) via a calcineurin-dependent pathway. The response to PlGF was associated with increased expression of flt-1 on RA monocytes, which could be induced by IL-1 and TNF␣. A novel anti-flt-1 hexapeptide, GNQWFI, abrogated the PlGF-induced increase in TNF␣ and IL-6 production, and also suppressed CII-induced arthritis and serum IL-6 concentrations in mice. Moreover, genetic ablation of PlGF prevented the development of anti-CII antibody-induced arthritis in mice.Conclusion. Our data suggest that enhanced expression of PlGF and flt-1 may contribute to rheumatoid inflammation by triggering production of proinflammatory cytokines. The use of the novel anti-flt-1 peptide, GNQWFI, may be an effective strategy for the treatment of RA.
