Development of multi-product calibration models of various root and tuber powders by fourier transform near infra-red (FT-NIR) spectroscopy for the quantification of polysaccharide contents

Abstract: The objective of this study was to quantify the chemical content of multiple products using one single calibration model. This study involved seven tuber and root powders from arrowroot, Canna edulis , cassava, taro, as well as purple, yellow, and white sweet potato, for partial least square (PLS) regression to predict polysaccharide contents (i.e., amylose, starch, and cellulose). The developed PLS models showed acceptable results, with R c 2 of 0.9, … Show more

“…Other less evident absorbance peaks are caused by overtones and combination modes of C–H, N–H, and O–H. The O–H and C–H vibrations are caused by compounds such as polysaccharides, triterpenoids and proteins [ 34 , 44 ]. As shown in Figure 2 , the high overlap of NIR spectra makes it difficult to directly utilize the spectral information of target components.…”

“…Satisfactory correlation between spectra and moisture content reference data was indicated by an R 2 c of 0.97 and RPD of 6. Masithoh et al. (2020) also conducted multi-product modeling with a large dataset, to determine the polysaccharide content.…”

“…Several researches have been conducted on the development of global multivariate models for rapid quality evaluation. In one study, an investigation was conducted to determine water content in freeze-dried drug products using NIR ( Clavaud et al., 2017 ), while another study utilized NIR spectroscopy was utilized to build global models for the assessment of amylose, cellulose, and starch content in various tuber and root products ( Masithoh et al., 2020 ). However, no research has been conducted on multi-product prediction based on Vis/NIR, in the Cucurbitaceae family.…”

“…Statistical methods, i.e., coefficient determination ( R 2 ) and standard error (S.E.) for both calibration and validation datasets, were used to select the best-obtained model [ 38 ]. The R 2 is the proportion of the variance in the dependent variable that is predictable from the independent variables and can be found with Equation (4).…”
